Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So I have always tried to make a bit of harmony between us cyclists and drivers/pedestrians
But I tell you it's just getting worse
So last week after doing an emergency stop, nearly going over my handlebars to avoid a pedestrian walking out in front of me. I yelled "mind" as I tried to avoid him. So only for him to start hurling abuse at him
Then this evening coming out of Sainsbury's car park, some kids threw their macdonalds containers out their car winder, which hit me. I suggested to the mum, they go in the bin and popped the containers back from through the window. At which point she threw her car door open, knocked me off my bike, kicked my bike down the road screaming at me.
Now I am a very tiny middle age woman, and so hardly a threat, and clearly these incidents are not the behaviour of our HOL citizens. But I have been a daily cyclist in London for the last 35years and these incidents become so frequent it's almost the norm. So next time you are annoyed with us cyclists, have a bit of compassion. You don't know what they have just had to deal with

It's not a quote like you probably look for on Twitter from the Daily Kos each morning to get your Trump vitriol fix. It's a result of deep, nearly lifelong study, of--

1) Natural law, as Aristotle, the Old/New Testaments, Cicero, Augustine, Aquinas and in particular Locke discussed; and,

2) From there, it's then tracing how Rousseau, Hegel, Marx then paved the way for the destructive progressive masterminds of the 20th century--Croly, Woodrow Wilson, Dewey and Weyl in particular come to mind.

Concerning today's topic, Dewey is the most dangerous of them all as he specifically focused on taking the progressive movement into the classroom and his visions for the role of schools are largely what they have become today, for the school is now a key tool of social reform as he advocated over 100 years ago.

Part of that social reform is that the statism and dependency on the state is to be promoted: Creating a permanent underclass in a democratic republic ensures that (modern day) liberals stay in power. Create a society where everything becomes an entitlement and anyone who even thinks of talking about such entitlements (e.g. the NHS) as being detrimental to the soul and Natural Law is turfed out before even getting to the starting line.

A by-product of the a welfare dependent person, who would not survive but for socialism, is a sense of no stake in society--for they have lost the virtues that Aristotle and Cicero talked about.  To them it's all one big rubbish tip; they don't pay for housing, they don't pay for schools, they don't pay for anything--so why should anyone expect their environment has any value to them when they don't know the value of anything?

Which brings us to this discussion.

In addition to my knowledge gained from deep study of the above, I am familiar with other heroes to you like the Fabian Society, Gramsci, etc etc.

Is that enough of a reference for you?

Enfield & Palmers Green has for months endured an over-budget over-time construction of part cycle path along Green Lanes. The raised path cuts through bus stops, is generally of poor quality construction, and (to my opinion) in parts dangerous. I await the plethora of cyclists who will still cycle on the now even narrower road (and the fights that ensue) just like they still cycle on the A10 and negotiate the Cambridge Roundabout ignoring the entire cycle-only network in place, and my polite shouting out of the car window at them in an attemt to get them to use it.

Right.

If you were assaulted by this woman in the way you allege then that is disgraceful (I would contemplate doing the same as you if that happened to me) but also completely illegal. I hope you reported it to the police. If not you should do it asap.

Hi Martin - if anyone tells me to use the cycle lane I'll tell them to do one, cyclists have as much right to use the roads.  This morning I set off to work up my road, and could sense and hear a car coming up behind me, but I maintained the primary position as it's safer then being within a door width of cars parked on both side of the rd.  I was then beeped, but I maintained primary position all the way to the end of the road.  Unfortunately the car driver didn't back off enough to make me feel safe,  until a car coming in the opposite direction forced them to pull over.  Moral of the story  - I wasn't going to let them intimidate me into moving over.  , car drivers often try to bully cyclists, easy to be a tough guy in 1 ton of metal.

Mavic: It sounds as if you are one of those people who know their rights but not their responsibilities.
Of course you have the right to cycle in the middle of the road if you want to but if you are saying that to exercise that right and prove a point you will ignore the cycle lane that is provided for your safety and continue to mix it with other traffic you are an idiot unwise. I have every right to stick my fingers in an electric light socket but common sense deters me.

Well as usual this gets into an argument, cyclists against everyone
My point was about having a bit of patience, and no I have no intention of reporting the woman as absolutely nothing will be done, police are way too busy with other things. I have reported hit and run accidents with full car details before and nothing is done. You get told no evidence etc
But to be honest, my point is that we are so frequently yelled at, abused for no reason, it becomes the norm. Obviously not my our respectable HOL members. I guess I'm older and calmer now, I also work as a nurse dealing with all sorts of shapes and sizes, and now I'm more able to think about the other person, whom probably had a shit day and suddenly I appeared and scared them. So I'm just trying to be more tolerant
I'm shutting this down as I don't want pages of arguments

And to be clear 90% of cycle lanes are unsafe, some very dangerous, don't comply with recommendations as much too narrow etc. So I along with lots of cyclists will avoid them, until I have checked them out properly.Unfortunately the statistics show the less experienced.female cyclists who use them are the ones who get killed. All the advice is to get out in the road and be seen so cars have to slow down
On that note. Happy weekend
