Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Inspired by this post  i thought i should let you kow about another scam that is no c doubt making its way au or down the ladder.

two days ago a guy knocked on the door. He called himself Dean from number 75. He was very friendly and explained that he was partaking in a sponsored penalty kick session in Hyde Park over the weekend and wondered if I would sponsor him. He had all the 'official' paperwork and some signatures of sponsors.  I did not recognise his face, and as i was on the phone at the time,  told him I was very busy and would pop by later and sign up.

Any how a bit later I went to see if there was in fact number 75 in my street. and lo and behold there was not.  I remembered that the house a few doors down had been burgled so I thought perhaps he was intending to burgle my house and that sponsorship thing was a way of casing the joint.  Obviously I called the police.

A description of Dean from  number 75 is as follows

Age: 26 - 40

height:  5.9 - 6 ft

Ethnicity: Black African or Caribbean

Accent: London (soft cockney)

Hair: Very short or balding

Build: Average to athletic

Dressed in sports wear tracksuit bottoms t -shirt and trainers

Name: Dean from number 75 (this of course may vary)

What road are you on?

On Tuesday a guy of a similar description approached me as I was walking in my front gate at around 6:10pm

He said he was collecting for a homeless charity and that it was his first day on the job. He tried to show me a scruffy ID card which did not look genuine - he had no paperwork or collection box either. He then told me he was homeless himself and if I could make a donation. I said I had no money on me and he said "Not even a couple of pounds?". All I had in my pocket was 20p and i took it out and said this is all I have to which he said " Forget it" and went across the road to knock on someone else's door.

I didn't recognise him from the first description as he did not seem particularly short and I thought he had hair and I don't remember him having a cockney accent (possibly may be different people); however, someone knocked on my door and said exactly the same thing as LP describes - this was also on Tuesday, i think. He had a scruffy ID and said it was his first day on the job and then said he was homeless himself and needed money to get into a hostel. I am on Seymour.

I believed he was homeless due to his presentation and felt quite sorry for him. Don't think it was a scam as such, just someone begging. Didn't have any money on me and didn't want to go back into the house to get any, but afterwards felt geuilty about not giving him anything.

Have spoken to neighbour and it may be that Dean is legit although there is no 75 in our street he could have honestly confused matters by not being clear about the street he lives on address so I will close this post.

Dean if you are actually Dean from from number 75 please accept my apologies but in future be a whole lot clearer about your address and bring some ID with you.
