In a pre-election liberalisation move the Department for Communities and Government (DCLG) yesterday announced a range of planning liberalisation measures that will be good news for some and bad news for others.
Two of the changes likely to impact Harringay most visibly make it easier for shops to get planning permission as restaurants and for warehouses to be turned into homes.
The new measures allow warehouses up to 500 square metres, to be converted into homes and allow more change of use between shops and financial and professional services, allowing the change of such uses to restaurants.
Of course the devil will no doubt be in the detail and we all need to wait for the experts to unpack exactly what the changes may mean, but what seems likely is that stalled applications such as the Vietnamese restaurant next to The Salisbury may now find their path smoothed. So too may any number of other restaurants! The new measures also open the door to regularising the situation in the Harringay Warehouse District.
