Daylight Burglary in St Ann's Area 8th April
Hi all, I'm new to the site. Think this is a great idea. I've recently moved to the St Ann's area from the ladder (we moved in December). Our house off Black Boy Lane was burgled on Thursday in the afternoon. The burglary was incredibly brazen. The front sash window of the house was popped open with a crowbar (breaking the locks) and the crooks took everything out through the front window over the fence. Once the electrical goods were all taken, there was an incredibly thorough search of everywhere in the house where we may have been stashing cash (there wasn't any). The place was a tip. My wife and baby son had gone out for a walk around lunchtime. This makes me particularly worried, as there is a good chance they may have been in. We sometimes don't answer the doorbell when we are home, particularly if we are putting the baby to sleep. It seems to me they must have been keeping an eye on us somehow. Someone told this seems to be part of a pattern in the last few weeks (going in through the front window in daytime). Has anyone seen anything odd in the last week? Has this happened to anyone else?

I didnt have a front window in my case so they just walked in the crappy door the landlord put on, but there was strange things happening at the rear of the property such as ladders where they should not have been etc, almost descibing an escape route although the back door, which locks from inside, was locked, so im thinking thats where the stuff went, out the back, and over the flat roofs.as my flat is first floor and backs on to a multitude of different dwellings. and as for being watched, like u I have kids and do not make a habbit of being anywhere other thank home on a school day, and it was a complete fluke that we went one day before school broke officially.....and it also worrys me as If im not expecting anyone I dont open the door at all.

Do you have sash window locks? See here.
Might be an idea to contact Securebase, a fairly local security company who should be happy to pop down and advise/give a quote for various options. Others on HOL have used them and been happy with their service.

Dont forget to keep garden tools locked out of sight. There's not many window frames can withstand the leverage a garden spade can exert.

Well, daylight burglary hasn't happened to me here in London but it did happen to me back when I was still living in the US. My then-husband and I lived in an apartment complex. Burglars watched for people with the most regular routines and then hit us, as well as three adjacent apartments while all of us were at work, except for one very unfortunate young couple who were on their honeymoon. The burglars hit the jackpot there and got all their wedding parents. In this case, the burglars were pros and were after specific items most easily fenced--TVs, stereos, and jewelry (this was thirty years ago, before notebook computers, iPods, fancy cell phones, and videogames). The jewelry I lost had no real value other than sentimental--no precious stones, no gold, no silver, just stuff I loved. I still feel the loss very keenly, believe it or not. They missed the few pieces of any real value, which were hidden elsewhere; I'd have gladly traded them that for the costume jewelry. But I digress.
Your burglars would not have gone in if your wife and baby had been at home--the idea is to get in and out as quickly as possible with the most valuable things they can find. They weren't just watching your house but the neighbouring houses as well, to make sure that there would be no one to raise the alarm. If you'd had a nosy neighbour next door, they'd have passed you by. This means your neighbours are vulnerable as well; if you haven't talked to them about what happened, it might be a good idea to do so. It could make them more alert.
I'll tell you what the police have told me time and again: the routines we find so comforting--and which babies need and enjoy--can work against us. Leaving for work/school/shopping/a walk at varying times, returning "unexpectedly" whenever possible, leaving one light on during the day like a reading lamp over a desk or in a bedroom, and even leaving your radio on in the kitchen or in the living room can persuade would-be intruders that someone *might* be in the house and they should pass it by. When we leave our house, we always call out that we'll be back shortly. Sometimes we're calling out to a person; sometimes we're calling out to the cat. I like to think that the cat is reassured.:)

Hello there, so sorry to hear about the break in- horribly scary. We have had a whole string of burglaries in our area- Roslyn Road,- similar pattern as the you are acts as you are describing but tended to occur in the evening but not late- when most people woud be hone. At one point I was wondering along our road about 8.30 pm as this appeared to be the time the burlgars were striking. Didn't see anything- don't worry wasn't going to do anything other than call police! Two different couple of young men have been seen. In one of the houses the owner was in and was terrified by the attempted burglary. It is worth getting in touch with your neighbourhood police who can get all types of wonderful door locks sorted for you. Though I think if anyone is determined enough they can break any door.We have a neighbourhood watch - a really good idea - you firstly, don't feel so alone, secondly, we've got members all over the road and those of us who work from home make sure pop out often to see what going on outside in the street and report back!! Seriously, I now notice so much and I'm out even politely asking if they are waiting for someone or why someone is looking through the bins. Nothing has occurred in our road ( that I know of) over the past couple of weeks so wonder if they have moved on. Oh, also I heard from another mum on another road that a couple of homes had been broken into when parents were dropping children at school. A neighbour reported having a series of encounters with a young man knocking always during the school run.
