Day of Action
As people may have seen from Social Media & elsewhere the MVM "Day of Action" went rather well.
This site is largely dedicated to local issues so I will try to add a few photographs of local people at local landmarks drawing attention to the need for P.R. in our democracy.
Demonstrations of this sort took place all over the country from people from all political points of view.
Unless we adopt this we will continue to be ruled by confusion & by people however well-intentioned who are detached from the electorate.

I hadn't really seen this, who should I be following?
I'm from New Zealand and it's obvious to all how well PR is working there.
I've written to David Lammy about it twice, the second time he said he was in favour of PR.

This day of action is a waste of police time and an unnecessary cause of traffic congestion.
We do not need Proportional Representation as a voting method. The present system works very well and the only party to support PR at the last general election, the Lib Dems, were nearly wiped out.
The present electoral system has given us strong and stable governments for the last 100 years and these governments have made the UK into a brilliant civic and economic society today, bar the Covid disruption.

How would you characterise Jacinda Ardern's coalition government then if not "strong and stable" (actually how strong and stable was our "strong and stable" government under Theresa May?)

The answer to Neil is that we have not had strong & stable Government. Pretty well all the Governments for a century or more have been minorities. One could claim that the exceptions would be the post-war Labour Govt., the mid 1980s Thatcher Govt., & possibly the current one.
Every other one was a minority with many of them relying on the cooperation or coalition with others. From the Lib/Lab pacts to the Conservative Liberal Alliance to Theresa May & the N. Irish parties.
To claim that Government is now strong & stable is an exaggeration. The current protests may be rather louder & shriller than their numbers may merit but they are happening because the two major parties have become out of touch with the electorate.
Both of them became rather more corporate entities than democratic institutions.
Politics is now a professional career path along with the Law & Medicine etc., rather than a public service.
Many feeling safe & perhaps rather self-satisfied. Unassailable in their safe seats.
Sarah is quite right, David Lammy, along with local MPs Tulip Siddiq, Stella Creasey & Bambos Charalambous is strongly in favour of PR.
At the last count there were about 150 MPs in favour as well as most Labour Party members. There is even some favour in the Conservative Party, with at least one MP openly supporting it.
All of the smaller parties, from Nigel Farage to the Scots.Nats. favour it.
At one time with a two party system First Past the Post may have worked but that time has passed.
To retain a stable society we need a broader representation.

MVM North London are holding their monthly Zoom meeting this Tuesday 8th September 2020 at 7.30pm.
This is our first since our "Day of Action" in August.
Please if anyone wishes to attend you will be most welcome.
We are a non-party political organisation which spans the respectable political spectrum.
So if you are Green, Labour, Conservative, Brexit Party or anything in between (or none of these) we are united in our belief that our current political system is sadly lacking in Democracy.
