Hugh pointed me in the direction of Los Angeles blogger
David Yoon who'd reposted one of my photos showing a Haringey 20 mph zone. David linked to the
Next American City website which helpfully contained a further link: a
BMJ article with data supporting the policy. It really does save lives and reduce serious injuries.
David Yoon has designs on Los Angeles streets which go beyond road safety. His blog
Narrow Streets is subtitled "a
fantasy urban makeover in photographs" and is exactly that. With some photoshop 'improvement' he narrows the wide open highways of LA and turns them into something more like human-scale European streets.
I've exchanged messages with David who tells me he's widened his attention to real-world possibilities of narrowing streets with what he calls "street infill". Here's an article (with photos) about engineering bikeability instead of painting bike lanes which - he says - nobody uses. Ideas we can borrow?
