Dangerous & violent mental health patient on the loose - Burgling & breaking in
Last sunday we got home late from the cinema, my partner took our dog out to the garden and she was stood around there for a while with him. Meanwhile we hadn't noticed helicopters going around above, as they often do.
Next thing we know, it's about 1am and 5 police cars & a bunch of heavy-looking police are gathered outside our house and knocking on our door very aggressively. The 3 big policemen at our door asked to investigate our garden ASAP with their verrrry big german shephard police dog as a violent psychopathic and physically huge man (also described by them as 'very big black man') had broken loose from a mental institution and had been stomping his way through the borough, through back gardens, smashing windows and breaking into peoples' houses. He has been 'active' in Enfield and many different parts of Haringey. We are in Seven Sisters kind of area.
They had been watching my partner on their thermal imaging from the helicopter and thought that she was this man in our garden!! Luckily, their gallant gentle giant police dog did not detect his presence in our garden and they all went on their way but said to leave lights on and lock everything up from now on. (We always do anyhow).
As far as i know, he's still on the loose, so be EXTRA vigilant. This man is dangerous and not breaking into houses necessarily for stealing, but for some other reason. If you see a big built black man acting suspiciously or breaking in, DO NOT APPROACH but call police.

Poor guy - he clearly needs help. I understand that, due to a shortage of beds, patients who have been sectioned were de-sectioned over the Christmas period. The BEHMHT should have used the redevelopment - and all the cash that comes with it - to increase the number of beds (there will actually be a decrease, so I understand?). He may well be a "big black man" (nothing wrong with that description per se) but we are talking about a human being, not a dog, being "on the loose"...

Not trying to de-humanize him at all, but when your door is nearly broken down by a team of police at 1am on a sunday night and you're told he is extremely dangerous, thought i'd share it with the locals to keep us all safe. Perhaps i should not have used 'on the loose' maybe, but that's how the police described it to us. Is it ok if a prisoner is 'on the loose' ? Not sure the right terminology but he escaped from the place he was being detained

If that is him I think it's worth mentioning the distinctive tattoo on his neck - the initials RB with a crown. Now just let me read that back to make sure the language police aren't going to find something objectionable... no looks fine to me.

I also agree that we would all be a lot safer if the council would put more funding into taking care of vulnerable and / or dangerous mental health cases. I do hope when he is found he is given better care.

I agree that the language used is a bit unfortunate and the police certainly should not have described the man in this way.
I had mental health awareness training last year where I learned that violence in people with mental health conditions is no higher than in the general population. But because of the language that tends to be used there is still such a stigma attached to having a mental health condition.

It's this guy. The language in the article illustrates the point I was making quite well I think. The Scotland yard statement described him as suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. The Hackney Gazette turns it into a noun, calling him a "paranoid schizophrenic".

Yes, that's the article you linked you from last November. Did the police say it was him?
Hackney is not far away so I just assumed that an article published on Monday about a dangerous man with a mental health condition being sought by police was about the same man they were searching for last week.

I never thought posting a notice on keeping safe while a criminal was on the loose, mentally ill or not, would cause so much backlash! Just doing you all a favour by reminding you to keep safe and lock doors etc, as the police told us. Anyone living in my neighbourhood could tell you the same!
