Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I’ve cycled along green lanes everyday for almost 30y, but think it’s getting worse

yesterday, a large cement mixer passed me, and then immediately turned left across me. Thankfully it was turning slow enough, that I could turn with it, and get off the road. Unbelievable. I’m an experienced cyclist, but another cyclist may not have been so lucky

Then a few weeks ago, a car was been driven erratically. I looked across to see the driver on the phone. I told her to get off the phone, to which she kept telling me how pathetic I was. Unfortunately I didn’t think to take her photo, as I’m sure the police would have had to prosecute. Next time I will

i have been knocked off twice over the last few years, once with a pedestrian suddenly running across the road. And another time, a car turning left across me. Luckily both times I bounced well. But my old bones may not be so forgiving in future

I’ve been a member of LCC for many many years. Hasn’t made any difference

Had a driver of a white Audi try to drive over me at the Endymion Rd lights, they were in the RH lane, and turning traffic meant their lane was slowing down. I was in primary position in the LH lane, on an Urban Arrow cargo bike, surrounded by bike users, unable to avoid the car without endangering someone else, so I knocked on their door mirror as it appeared beside my handlebars. Best practise would have been to use the bell, but it was an emergency.

“You scratched my car!” came the scream from the unhinged passenger, sitting in the back, with a child. Driver shadowed me up the hill while the passenger threw things at me. Sweets I think, followed by the pot. Poor kid, having their mum throw their treats at a stranger.

For bike users the background daily low key aggression makes Green Lanes easily the worst part of any journey in or out of central London. The Haringey sized gap in cycling infrastructure on this road is shameful, dangerous and inefficient, all for the sake of a few dozen car park spaces, easily replaced by re-allocating a few residents spaces on each of the Gardens and ladder roads.

I find it very frustrating that Haringey Council had a golden opportunity to rework Wightman Road to make it safer for cyclists. Unfortunately they made a hames of it and made it MORE dangerous. Same with Broad Lane/Monument Way: they could have made it cycle friendly throughout but just made it more dangerous!

It;s freaking unbelievable there's still no protected cycle lane on this crucial connection between the ones in Enfield in the north and Islington in the south/ We all know what an absoultely crap council "rebel" Haringey is but tit's outdone itself here.

I think everyone who cycles through Green Lanes has stories to tell :/ There are cycle lanes all over the city inc. Finsbury Park, Stoke Newington - but not Green Lanes where accidents occur daily. I suspect this is because the business owners prefer to have car parking (narrows the street) over bike lanes.

The truth is that Green Lanes is really dangerous for everyone, not just cyclists. I cycle and get scared every time I cycle through, especially later in the afternoon. But I have also seen so many times near misses with cars or vans getting really close to hit pedestrians, either because of speeding, or for not stopping at traffic lights / zebra crossings. I don’t know what’s about this road in particular, but it really seems worse than many other similar roads elsewhere in London 

Um, forget about cyclists, I think it’s dangerous for pedestrians. 

Since LTN introduction I've noted increasing traffic congestion on Green Lanes, West Green Road and St Ann's Road. I know the residents in the back streets are happier but these three roads evidence long lines of stationery traffic pumping out lead fumes and very frustrated drivers unfortunately. I've no doubt this increases the road rage mentioned here. As a walking pedestrian I'm also noting how often cyclists are racing through red lights and taking no notice of pedestrians' crossing. The whole scene is a disaster waiting to happen.

My experience of bike use in Green Lanes is the same as it was 12 years ago. It’s quicker to walk than sit on the bus.

West Green Rd and St Ann’s Rd are busier during peak time, otherwise noticeably quieter.

Low traffic neighbourhoods reduce local car journeys as it becomes slightly less convenient to drive short distances. They also enable the possibility of active travel for people otherwise put off by speeding through traffic taking shortcuts and giving nothing except noise, destruction and death.

There's an unofficial LTN in The Gardens roads along the restaurant patch of Green Lanes...This has been established quietly with no consultation across The Ladder residents. Of course it's helped kept traffic on Green Lanes from the Overground Bridge down.... AND has also made Wightman Road a cut through and hence increased traffic there.

These roads have been blocked for those drivers who aren't local but through users just like those using Wightman Road:

1. The Kimberley Gardens road access to St Anne's Road was blocked off by a councillor outside their house over 10 yrs ago.

2. Secretly over the last few years ...the exit down Warwick Gardens into St Anne's Road has been closed by making a cycle only path on to St Ann's Road.

Did the people who pushed for this realise what the effect would be? Obviously not. It's dog eat dog...no one cares about the overall flow across The Ladder roads part from their patch.

Can we reverse the closures on the following roads? 

 - Kimberley Gardens into St Anne's Road

 - Warwick Gardens into the same.

What madness?

What selfishness?

Does TFL understand what has happened when it wonders why all the bus routes get clogged along here. 

Personally I NEVER trust car drivers especially when they are stuck in a queue.

Stay back...don't get into a fight... protect yourself by pre judging/assessing other road users especially the ones with four wheels. Mind you I have often as a pedestrian had to check my path when motorised E bikes jump out of nowhere cutting through. 

So can we change this for the good of all?   

In promoting LTNs the mantra of reducing local car journeys is always wheeled out... this isn't the real effect. They simply are there to cut out cars and delivery vans etc from cutting through. Let's be honest.
