Cycling on the pavement on Green Lanes
Yesterday when walking down Green Lanes I was nearly hit by a man riding a bike weaving in and out of the pedestrians on the pavement. The man was cycling quite quickly and if I hadn't jumped out of the way I think I would have got quite badly hurt. I have noticed that a lot of cyclists are using the pavements on Green Lanes and every time I see it I think how dangerous it is, particularly for older people who I can imagine will find it quite intimidating (I know I do!) These people are not children and really should be cycling on the road.
Has anyone else experienced this problem on Green Lanes?

Yes in Wood Green High Road, outside Sainsbury's. Guy was weaving like your man, really fast through load of pedestrians. Guy shouted at him in protest and was just told to shut up. Someone is going to get really injured soon.

People really should be considerate of others, shouldn't they? On the other hand, responsible cycling is an activity that should be encouraged as it brings many benefits to the community if more people choose to cycle. Many people are put off because the roads don't look and feel safe enough. Green Lanes isn't really very pleasant to cycle on and traffic goes too fast on many roads in Haringey. The threat of injury & death to cyclists and especially to pedestrians is actually far greater from cars, buses and lorries. If Haringey improved space for cycling on Its roads then a broader range of people might feel able to participate including children and older people.

I agree that responsible cycling should be encouraged and there is definitely work to be done on the roads around Haringey. However, I don't feel that there is any excuse for cyclists hurtling down the pavement and forcing pedestrians to move out of their way. Over the last few months I have felt quite unsafe walking down Green Lanes and think it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt

Ditto. As I was leaving the green lanes gate from Finsbury Park the other day waking my dog a man in a bike flew past on the pavement stupidly fast if my kids had been with me and run out of the gate to push the bottom on the crossing he would surely have seriously injured them it really made me quite upset to think about it . It's not right and he clearly did not care at all he was a grown man why would he not be on the road .

Don't you know, it's now policy? The re-jigged Tottenham ex-gyratory has no cycle lanes, but wider pavements that are designated as mixed pedestrian/cycle ways. No divide, painted or otherwise. Doesn't really seem to have caught on as I've not seem many cyclists mixing in as planned - especially up the High Rd past tescos. There are little signs on posts to make it clear it's legal.
If pedestrians understand that this is the case, it may work. But only if.
I think it's bonkers, they have created 3 to 4 metre wide pavements that could easily be physically split, keeping cycles out of the traffic. The only tricky bit is by the bus stops, which have to be on the kerbside so bikes would need diverting and so mixing up with people on legs. As said here, it will be ruined by fuckwits cycling as if on a racetrack with no care for pedestrians obstructions.

We have both a Traders' Association and barricades of melons. But also extra wide pavements, an historical anomaly, right up the High Rd from Seven Sisters to Tottenham Green. Wider than Green Lanes, forsure.

mixed pedestrian/cycle ways makes logical sense. A cycle lane is used about 5% of the time. But you rarely see pedestrians in it.
By having mixed, you create alot more free space for pedestrians, who will utilise it more.
Again, using logic, cyclists would use the right hand side, closest to the road.
Sadly we on whole, lack logic.......so I can understand that its a clusterfuck.

If pedestrians use a cycle lane, it's no longer a cycle lane. Dutch cyclists get very testy if a pedestrian strays onto the cycle lane.

I think it is illegal to cycle on the pavement but it is becoming an increasing problem in much of Harringay and not only Green Lanes. What can be done about it? Probably most people are not even aware of the law!

They're aware of the law but, as with many offenders, they just don't care. Ever seen a car driver using a hand-held mobile phone ? Ever seen someone dropping litter in the street ?
