Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I walked past Crouch Hill Reservoir on Saturday and was saddened to see that most of the surface area was newly mown.

This being just before No Mow May seemed very much out of whack with Thames Water's stated aim of supporting biodiversity -

I've written to Thames Water to raise this issue with them. If anyone else feels the same, please also contact them to ask why they could not leave the mowing until June or later to allow natural wildflowers to flourish a short while.

Thanks for raising this. Thames seem to have an aversion to husbanding the resources they acquired for the good of the environment. About five years ago, I asked them if the east bank of the New River on the stretch between Hampden and Wightman cold be left unmown / managed for wildlife. They came back with an unlikely sounding story about it not being possible die to the need to maintain the riverbank.

Their spaces must be just a few of countless such spaces across cities and the the countryside nationwide. It seems to beg for a high profie campaign.

The New River and the Reservoir could be mown once a year in autumn. It would save a tonne of cash and carbon, while maintaining access and boosting biodiversity. Mad that they don't take this approach.

Just walked along the ‘New Cut’ (Hampden-Wightman) to see that they e just slashed all the growth on the west bank between the path and the railway land. I cant see how that can have any benefit for the river.

There is a lot of mowing going on everywhere at the moment. I ran to work today and in one park in Islington the freshly mown grass really triggered my hayfever.

I really agree that this would make a great campaign.  I have some vague feeling that I have contacted Thames Water about this in the past and they said then that there are service pipes that come up from the reservoir and that they need to be able to see these.  I don't know why they cannot put up markers of some sort to assist them.....if anyone gets a person to contact that would be helpful.

I also agree that the council could embrace No Mow May in lots of places.....it would save them (and us) money (or at least use it for other things) !!
