Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Councillors & Wannabees, today's good news is you don't have to be dynamite to win a Nobel Prize.

Just so long as you are promising, very promising, with a good line in the vision thing and a penchant for international travel, you too can be a contender. Yes you can!

You don't have to swing Olympic tiddlywinks for Ally Pally, Crouch End or even Bruce Grove - but make sure you're there to front the bid. Bring the wife or hubby along as well.

You don't have to have achieved your dreams to get to Oslo in December 2010 - but for Gawd's sake let us know you have them. Don't hide'em under a bushel or keep them too close to your chest.

You don't have to be deep into the Green Thing - but get rid of that rose garden and plant organic veg. Better still, get wife or hubby to do it while you shoot baskets (not peasants).

It might help if you arrange to be Haringey's rep in Copenhagen this December. Take a day trip to Stockholm and tell them Nobel was a saint. I promise you, Oslo will get interested - jealous even. Oslo needs world-beaters like you.

Councillor, even if you're just dipping your toe in the water for the first time, don't be shy. You can be a contender. Just tell us what you hope to do for Harringay and World Peace from June'10. We'll nominate you and you'll be off 'To Noroway, to Noroway, to Noroway o'er the foam' within your first 200 Days.

If I just whisper in your ear: "W1 Wightman Road Bus", I'm sure you'll be inspired to write that in your heart - though in that regard dreams and promises may not be enough.

Finally, a word to the wise: Did you know that President emeritus B. Ohailey has his Oslo Speech completed and is busy taking screen tests. Competition could be fierce. You know he, too, is a very promising young man.

Good news is, though, he's going for the FICTION ("literature")Gong. To everyone his specialism. That's what made Alfred Nobel such a dynamo.

Yes, isn't it bizarre that Obama has been given Nobel Peace prize just months into his presidency. He's probably a little embarassed himself.
Who do we think SHOULD have been awarded the Nobel Peace prize ?
Dunno. Who do you think James?
Since you've asked, James, but nominated no alternative (and since this thread's under Harringay - Community Information & News let me help:

My Nomination: BRUCE KENT (Lothair Road Sth, Harringay), former Chairman CND and lifelong Peace Campaigner. Still going strong, despite the attentions of MFI MI5 etc.

If you think Bruce's credentials and continuing track record do not deserve a trip to Oslo, consider the worthy winners below:

Henry Kissinger (to share with Le Duc Tho) 1973: War criminal/Dirty Tricks Supremo - but I suppose sharing it between Nixon & Pinochet might have presented some minor difficulties.

FW De Clerk (to share with Mandela) 1993: for not being Verwoerd or any of his other predecessors.

Arafat/Peres/Rabin 1994 - for encouragement, maybe, a bit like Barack's.

Corrigan & Williams "The Northern Ireland Peace Women" 1976 - for marching around Belfast and a few English cities singing peace ditties, then falling out and disappearing.

(Lord) David Trimble (to share with John Hume) 1998 - for happening to be the Unionist leader and for not being Ian Paisley.

There are some even more dubious awardees in the list. Some of the best decisions were to make no decision some years.
Correction: President emeritus B. Ohailey reminds me he won't be going to Oslo. He will instead be going to Sweden for the Fiction Prize awarded by the Swedish Academy.

@matt: Sure is. Seems some bright spark nominated him before February last. He doesn't have to refund it even if everything falls apart.
Not really so strange. It is a wonderful European snub towards GW.
Not really so sure, John. Will all Olympic competitors be given a Gold Medal before their events to encourage them towards victory. I think W's probably laughing louder than Barack just now.
