Following the successful renaming of Blackboy Lane, Haringey Council has agreed to accept the recommendations of the Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm set up by Mayor Sadiq Khan in 2020. In a press release issued this morning, Labour Secretary for Foreign Trips and MP for Tottenham, Livid Dummy, endorsed the recommendations and wallowed in the outpouring of praise from American college campuses, proscribed organisations across the middle east and the comments section of the Guardian newspaper.
The recommendations with a local impact in Haringey include:
- Supporting local businesses by suspending weekend resident parking throughout Harringay and St. Ann's Wards. The parking spaces will instead be made available to customers of Green Lanes restaurants. Council officers are working with the Harringay Traders Association to develop a process for Parking Wardens to identify those customers to ensure their cars are not ticketed in error. To avoid complications the Traders have proposed that the process not require the use of restaurant VAT receipts. Lack of parking for restaurant customers has been found to be particularly difficult during festive celebrations. Some customers reported having been forced to resort to public transport.
- Removing markers of non-inclusive histories. These include the removal of certain non-inclusive symbols and soldiers' names from World War 1 and 2 war memorials throughout the Borough. The names are considered problematic due to their not representing all community identities. They will be replaced with the names of residents who have demonstrated their commitment to more progressive causes.
The changes are expected to be implemented immediately and to be concluded by 1 April 2026. Funds will be reallocated from school and care budgets to meet the additional costs which are expected to be underestimated and obfuscated in line with normal practice.
