Council announces £300,000 for 'traffic calming" in 'The Gardens' area of Harringay
The following is a press release from Haringey Council:
A local community will help redesign the street layout of their neighbourhood through a Haringey Council project that will see the area transformed.
The Gardens area off Green Lanes in Harringay has been chosen for the Community Streets neighbourhood improvement project.
The project will look at several key elements including innovative traffic calming design, reclaiming space, designing the streets for people rather than traffic, and promoting healthy and environmentally friendly transport modes.
The first year of the two year project will involve regular meetings with the local community to agree proposals and plan the street works which will begin next year.
The council has asked Sustrans, the UK’s leading transport charity who completed the successful Turnpike Lane DIY Streets project last year, to work with them again to get the community involved.
Haringey's Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, said:
"Community engagement is key to the success of this project. It will give the initiative back to residents and allow them to create a space suitable for people to meet, socialise, and play. I hope everyone will get involved and take this opportunity to help design their own neighbourhood."
The project is funded by the council and TfL and will focus on the Gardens neighbourhood, including: Chesterfield, Cleveland, Devon, Doncaster, Essex, Grafton, Kimberley, Portland, Rutland, Stanhope, Sussex and Warwick Gardens.
These roads were chosen because they are near to Green Lanes and will complement the upcoming town centre improvements.
The project will be completed by July 2014.
A community engagement event for Community Streets will take place on the 29 September in Grafton/Doncaster Gardens and will be linked with the Garden Residents' Association 10 year anniversary celebrations for their Community Garden.

One cannot deny her sense of style. I have to admire her cojones (OK, let's not be pedantic) for residing on Harringay Heights in Harringay Ward's extreme Occident while cultivating her more Oriental Gardens. Will the whole neighbourhood soon be St Anns Green Lanes Gardens?

John, as you well know, I have no problem challenging or criticising what I regard as wrong decisions or poor judgement. Or supporting and praising what appear to be sound projects and valuable pieces of work. I also know that people I dislike and distrust can be right. And the opposite is true too. (Occasionally Cllr Claire Kober and very occasionally Cllr Richard Wilson get something right. I'm happy to give them credit.)
But before making sweeping assertions or arriving at a conclusion, I prefer to establish, examine and check facts. Various people, including Hugh, Liz, Alison P and me, have sketched out what needs asking about the Community Streets scheme. Was there a fair and open process of identifying locations for this scheme? Were criteria set and met? Will the process of consultation produce the right scheme in the right place?
Hugh has provided links to some of the documents which the Council have put into the public domain.
In any case, John, I doubt that anyone believes that a single traffic calming scheme now will deliver a load of votes in 2014. I would be condescending to residents if I thought they were that gullible. Will a few people change their vote in my ward because we've put new equipment in Down Lane Park and on Ferry Lane Estate? I seriously doubt it. More probably local residents will rightly think: "It's about time!"

Alan there is a MILE of difference between "new equipment in Down Lane Park and on Ferry Lane Estate" and the proposed plans for the Gardens and well you know it. This is to please the local Labour party who select the candidates and have in the past shown themselves to be ruthless.
And you know what else? Some people are so greedy and shallow that they vote for tax cuts that benefit themselves even to the detriment of the rest of the economy.
Good luck with your enquiries guys, if you get anywhere I'll be honestly shocked.
