Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm in the process of renewing my contents insurance but the first two companies I've called said that I'm in a "subsidence risk area". I've lived here for six years (Lausanne Rd) and in the area for thirteen and never come across this before. Has anyone else come across this for contents (not building) or do you think it's a new thing? Perhaps the insurance companies are feeling the squeeze - ha!

It's all the claims of damage to houses by lorries... kidding. I bet it's because your postcode is 30m closer to the New River than mine (even if you are a metre or so higher above sea level).

Did they say subsidence when they meant flooding? Subsidence is not a contents issue but flooding may well be.

That sounds like a bit of a sneaky one. A few years back I was renewing our building insurance and noticed a new clause about subsidence and a £3k excess - but only in relation to building claims, not contents. Is subsidence really a major issue when it comes to people claiming on their contents insurance?

You're probably right though - insurers thinking of a new way of getting everyone to pay more. Were you refused insurance or are they just trying to get higher premiums from you?

Thanks both, I managed to go back to our current insurer and they dropped their quote by 50% and they didn't even mention subsidence so it's all fixed. Here's hoping we stay flood, burglary and even lorry free a few more years!
