Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Further to an earlier discussion on HoL, the people of Haringey are getting their say on whether their borough should keep its council leader and cabinet - or have a Mayor directly elected by residents.

The Government wants local authorities to decide between two options: a leader and cabinet arrangement, similar to the current system, except that the leader would be elected by councillors for a four-year term; or a directly elected Mayor.

Haringey councillors from all parties backed the leader and cabinet option at a council meeting last month.

Final decisions will be made at a special council meeting in December following consultation.

Councillor Lorna Reith, deputy council leader, said: "We have looked into this very carefully, and the unanimous view of councillors from all parties is that the leader model is the best way to secure economic, efficient and effective running of the authority.

"We also consider that it is the option most likely to maintain accountability to the various communities represented by local ward councillors. Now we want to hear what local people think." Consultation runs until Friday, October 9.

To give your views or find out more see the Leadership Consultation page on Haringey's website.

A copy of the full proposal document is available there as well as for inspection until October 9 at the public reception desk at the civic centre, High Road, N22.

Whether they're called a Mayor or a council leader, we need a Head of Haringey who has a sign on his desk like Harry Truman:

A reminder that this consultation is still ongoing until 6th October.
