Conman or good man in N15
Last night at about 10.15 a man rang our doorbell and when I looked out through porch window he began asking if I'd lost a canary that day, he was holding an ice-cream carton with the lid sitting loosely on it, he told me that he was going door to door in the hope of finding the owner as he would hate the thought of some old lady or little child being upset at the loss of their pet, he had apparently rescued it from some children at the bottom of the road whom he said "were trying to get their dogs to eat it." When I asked to see the canary he was reluctant to take the lid off and just lifted it enough for me to see that there was indeed a yellow bird right in the corner of the carton but funnily enough the bird was not trying to escape or even moving, strange after its horrendous ordeal from which this kind soul had rescued it not long before, he was at pains to tell me how much of an animal lover he was and was trying to do a good deed, he also told me he has dogs at which point I made sure to tell him that I also had a dog, I suspect that was why he told me he kept dogs, he seemed really excited and animated. My next door neighbours returned while he was at my door and he immediately began calling out to them, asking if they lived nearby and went through the whole story for them again. At that point he wished me goodnight and said he would continue his door to door quest for the owner, I've felt very uneasy since then and made extra sure everything was secured, I think this guy was on an information gathering mission. I don't know if I should report it to the police or not but thought I would post it here to see if anyone else had a visit from this man. He is very polite and friendly and full of chat. Conman or good man, my gut feeling is conman. I live on Clinton Road in N15.

yes he did, but the last thing he said was he was going to continue with the door-to-door search, which he clearly hasn't and I assume that when my neighbours returned he was wrong-footed and had to make a play of it, he didn't call to my neighbours on the other side or a couple of doors away on either side, I'm waiting to hear from friends directly across the road yet. I have reported it to the police and someone will be calling round I've been told. Also just heard about an attempted break-in at lunchtime last week on Falmer Road, just around the corner from me, it would appear that there's a gang operating around here at the moment.

Reading on hol there has been a spate of break ins on the ladder too. You are right to be vigilant.

I was working just now round about 3pm in my front garden in Cranleigh Rd and watched a man in his 30s possibly scoping houses on the north side of the street. He had one or two few yellow cab cards in his hand, as if he might be delivering them. But he was only going up to the front doors of the very few houses which had their windows closed on this fine day. He then spent a lot of time at each front door of those two houses. He didn't notice me watching him, but when I walked towards him to ask him what he was doing he walked off and turned southwards into Woodlands Park Rd. I didn't give chase. In retrospect I probably should have reported it there and then, doubt he's around any more.

This man was in his late 20s to early 30s as well, the one who called last night. The police have been around and have taken my report and agree with me that it probably was someone sussing out who was in and what they were like as in who has dogs or who lives alone etc. His story just does not add up at all, don't think a tiny canary would stand much chance of escaping from not just one dog but dogs as I was told.

So open windows are a clue that's someone's home, like leaving a light on? Is that why he would only look at closed-window places?
One day I will catch one red-handed when I'm holding a blunt implement.

I would defo report to police. If he is a "vulnerable person" then the police would prob know about his door to door knocking as someone would have I'm sure reported him before. It does sound like some information gathering. What is you wasn't in? Would you have been targeted for burglary. Defo report!
