Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last night at about 10.15 a man rang our doorbell and when I looked out through porch window he began asking if I'd lost a canary that day, he was holding an ice-cream carton with the lid sitting loosely on it, he told me that he was going door to door in the hope of finding the owner as he would hate the thought of some old lady or little child being upset at the loss of their pet, he had apparently rescued it from some children at the bottom of the road whom he said "were trying to get their dogs to eat it." When I asked to see the canary he was reluctant to take the lid off and just lifted it enough for me to see that there was indeed a yellow bird right in the corner of the carton but funnily enough the bird was not trying to escape or even moving, strange after its horrendous ordeal from which this kind soul had rescued it not long before, he was at pains to tell me how much of an animal lover he was and was trying to do a good deed, he also told me he has dogs at which point I made sure to tell him that I also had a dog, I suspect that was why he told me he kept dogs, he seemed really excited and animated. My next door neighbours returned while he was at my door and he immediately began calling out to them, asking if they lived nearby and went through the whole story for them again. At that point he wished me goodnight and said he would continue his door to door quest for the owner, I've felt very uneasy since then and made extra sure everything was secured, I think this guy was on an information gathering mission. I don't know if I should report it to the police or not but thought I would post it here to see if anyone else had a visit from this man. He is very polite and friendly and full of chat. Conman or good man, my gut feeling is conman. I live on Clinton Road in N15.

Sounds like a good natured person perhaps with some 'special needs'? Not much of a con man anyway....

Yes, I thought good man at first as he even told me I could find him over the" 24hr place" on West Green Road if I happened to find the owner but wouldn't be drawn on being more specific and as there are quite a few 24 hour establishments around here I don't think I will have much luck with that but I will keep an eye out for him. Could be a conman who's intentionally so bad at it that in fact he's very good.

do you think that a con man would use such a crazy story and pretend he had a canary in a cup? Im thinking good guy.

I hope you're both right but my gut feeling tells me otherwise, we have had burglaries on this road in the last few weeks. I have only posted it to see if anyone else has had a late- night visit from this gent, he continually repeated that he was going door-to-door and if he hasn't done so then I wonder why I was chosen. It was in an ice-cream carton and am not sure if it was real canary or not as it never moved and I was only allowed a peek and it was dark.

It is strange I admit, the bird wouldn't move if it was in a confined space anyway. Perhaps ask some of your neighbours?...during daylight hours of course! :-)

I would say conman or at least weird and certainly not someone to open the door to in the night time.

Firstly because he wouldn't reply clearly when you asked about which 24 hr place he could be found at if you found the owner of the missing bird.

Secondly because if he genuinely found the bird at the bottom of the road then he could have told the people who own the corner shop on Blackboy Lane who are very helpful and community minded, rather than ring all the doorbells.

Thirdly because I've never heard of a live bird that wouldn't struggle to get out of a box if you lifted the lid.

And fourthly as noone else has posted that he visited them, it sounds like he didn't call at many other houses.

 Thanks for warning us.

What a peculiar story. So do you think he was specifically trying to weed out homes with dogs for a possible burglary mission?

Will keep an ear out...

Yes I think he was as it was not just a passing comment, he told me he had dogs and then waited expectantly for me to reply, he also made his excuses rather quickly when my neighbours arrived, whereas up to that point he was very chatty.

It might be an idea to contact your local community police. They may be aware of him?

Yes I think I shall report it as I've just been out and asked a few of the neighbours if they'd had a visit and so far no-one else has, looks like I'm the chosen one, not a nice feeling at all.

also been told that there have been five burglaries on this road in the last two weeks.

Hmm, didn;t you say in your post that he called out to your neighbours when they arrived and went through his whole stoy for them again?...
