That is, it's still asleep, got a hangover, is on strike, or just can't be bothered playing ball. Engineers are frantically trying to wake the computer up. Question for later is; was the system hacked?

Computer says planes are allowed to take off but not allowed to land.

When asked if the controllers couldn't switch over to manual operation the answer was basically that they don't have the necessary training.

There's of course a knock on effect worldwide, with the Europe flight control centre diverting flights from the UK where they can for the moment, unless flying across UK air space.

"Nats air traffic control has advised that, due to air traffic control telephone equipment failure at Swanwick, they are currently experiencing some difficulty switching from night-time to daytime operations.

"Technicians are working to try to resolve the issue but have advised that this is unlikely to be before 2pm today," Abta says.
