Hi HoL community
We are looking to replace our 12" broken coal hole cover and wonder if anyone has one laying around needing a new home. Would rather replace than pave over so thought i'd ask here before rummaging through architectural salvage yards. Additional - any tips/pointers on where we might look to find are welcomed.
Thanks.
Margaret
Before replacing it, where does it drop into, and is there room for a small boy to go through it? A friend was once burgled during the night (while she was in, and he arrived in her bedroom and it was v v scary) and it took us ages to work out how he had got in - the coal-hole cover was slightly displaced. He'd dropped into the basement and then made his way up through the house. So I concreted over it the next day, and told all the neighbours to do the same.
Thank you Pamish for the headsup - wouldn't have occurred to me at all! We were planning to secure the plate in place though - not have it loose. Disturbing and sadly not surprising to learn that these sorts of things go on. Thanks again.
Pass it on.
I think it's possible to secure these from the inside but in our case, the old bolts had rusted away and an inch of concrete was quick and easy. I'd never done concreting before but I figured that watching my dad do it gave me concrete-mixing powers enough. Was true.
