Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Following his failure to be reselected by the St Ann's Labour party Cllr Haley this afternoon announced his decision to cross the floor and join the Lib Dems.

I imagine that we can therefore expect imminently an announcement that he'll be standing with a different shirt on at the next elections.

I've been told that there's been intense discussion between the centre and the local party about this move.

Only today, Brian rang me on my mobile (whilst I was out doing something secret but worthwhile) to ask me if we were in touch with The Wood Green Mob to "gang up" up against him. He also said he personally liked me and wishes the All Blacks well in the World Cup. Wonder what Danny C will say to that?

The truth is that Brian used to call me -- as Chairman of Harringay Swingers - on a regular basis to leak confidential information to me and aid us in embarrassing his own Naked Council (of which he was a leading voyer).

He talked endlessly about joining the Harringay Swingers - even asking me if the D**ks Department at HQ would put him on the approved list to be a Big Swinging D**k. When I told him that he would not get special treatments, he then met with Alcoholic Glee Club member Brian Doleman with a huge shopping list, including a senior position on the London Getting Wasted Authority and ten cans of Stella. Coleman told him to get lost.

I have asked Hayley to delete all my details and not contact me again. He's horrible and I don't like him. So there.

We took the decision two weeks ago not to accept his application if he were to make one and made it clear on The Harringay Swinger's Blog. That bunch of people he hangs out with now are just unattractive naked. Simples.

Sorry Justin, I hope you see the funny side. I just couldn't resist.
Ho,ho!
Brian... He's not a Labour Councillor, he's a very naughty boy!

Last time I saw Brian, he was canvassing me on my doorstep to vote Labour in the Euro Elections. Inspired by his new convictions, I might join the bandwagon by taking his then advice and voting Labour at the next elections!!

I notice too that Adam has started a new forum asking about DJs. Can I start a playlist for Brian's farewell party:

Hall & Oates: "She's Gone"
"She's goooooooone, I'll pay the devil to replace her".....
Just a few points to follow on from the recent disscussions here:
1. No deal was made between the Lib Dems and Brian Haley. Indeed no deal could have been made, because it is entirely for our membership to decide who the candidates are to be and where they are to stand. He applied to join us because he believes in us. We accepted because we believe in him. It’s as simple as that.
2. I cannot recall ever having been critical of Brian personally or professionally. Over the years I have sparred with him at Area Assemblies and the like, but that was because each of us was doing our job. His was to defend the Labour administration and mine was to subject it to scrutiny. Until he came to accept that the Labour administration was indefensible, he did a good job defending them, and I respected him for it.
3. In common with thousands of voters, Brian has decided that the Labour leadership is not up to the job of running the Council. Chatter about Labour’s selection procedures should not be allowed to obscure this salient fact.
4. Any suggestion that he may have considered defecting to the Tories is as unlikely as any suggestion that any other voters in Haringey might be going over to that party. They haven’t elected a Councillor in Haringey since 1998 for the very good reason that they have nothing to offer to the people of this Borough.

David, rather than making cheap party political points, accept the FACT that your new councillor was in contact with us about defecting - I have already shared with HOL readers some of the items of his shopping list.

Why did that Lynne Featherstone and all local Lib Dem bloggers have removed all mentions of Brian Hayley (all negative) from their site? Lib Dem censorship or more opportinism that we've all become familiar with?
Here's a recent quote from Cllr Matt Davies (LD, Fortis Green Ward) on Cllr Hayley: "Labour cabinet member Cllr Brian Haley is well known for daft comments and offending..."

And this from Lynne Featherstone's blog: "The whole (parking) saga shows that Brian Haley doesn't understand local parking issues in Highgate – and doesn't seem to care either. If he can't get to grips with this simple local problem, it's not clear how other serious parking problems in Highgate and in the borough can be solved"

Mysteriously, they have now been removed which rather proves my point.
Fascinating. That was Winston Smith's job in Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Indeed!
There will be no such opportunities to post-censor on here. I'll even be looking to copy and post blogs that any political parties link to, although they could save me the trouble and it would be a mark of their honesty, if they did it themselves.
Exactly John! And there'll be little opportunity to post-censor anything online.

You post it; you live with it. Changed your mind? Do it honestly, openly and explain the reasons.

Same with all those emails, reports and even videos that go on the net. And documents filed on public websites. If we say two opposite things to two different audiences, we're going to be found out.
"I never wrote/posted that". "Oh, but you did. Here's the download/web-link."
One response is to clamp-down and try to stem the flow. Hopeless - unless you're the Chinese Government, and maybe not even then. Another possibly more successful strategy is to talk anodyne bureauburble - a string of clichés.
"We have a rolling programme to address the concerns."
But maybe a more positive outcome will be greater honesty and openness; with far more genuine public debate.
Alan: "Another possibly more successful strategy is to talk anodyne bureauburble - a string of clichés."
cliches, i'd mention them but lets not go down that road.
Oh, and this from a national newspaper:

Councillor Brian Hayley has denied his remark - in which he liked Cllr Laura Edge to a trifle - was sexist

A councillor walked out of a town hall meeting in tears after a colleague compared her to a trifle - saying she was 'lightweight and sweet'.
Lib Dem councillor Laura Edge walked out of the meeting of Haringey Council in London after Labour politico Brian Hayley issued the insult during a debate about bus tickets.
Cllr Hayley, Labour's cabinet member for the environment, accused Cllr Edge of 'not understanding' the debate, telling her: 'I do have to say Cllr Edge, you're a bit like a trifle.
'Very sweet and very lightweight.'

It was a this point that Cllr Edge, a prospective parliamentary candidate for Finchley and Golders Green, walked out of the meeting 'looking upset'.
Cllr Hayley issed an apology on Monday, but denied his remark was sexist adding: 'I thought it was fair comment for the political arena and I was shocked when she ran out (of the meeting).
'I would have said the same thing to a man. But if I knew what the reaction would be I would never had said it.'

Cllr Edge, however, said she felt the comment was sexist, adding: 'I did feel it was sexist and degrading.
'It was like the meeting had suddenly descended into a children's playground.
'The Labour Party is supposed to be big on equality in the workplace and one would assume that includes politics.
'The implication that you can't possibly know about these matters because you are a woman is insulting.'

The incident took place during a discussion about setting up a one hour all-access £1 bus ticket in the area allowing passengers to travel on several buses for an hour
