Given a huge boost in the polls by Nick Clegg’s performances in Britain’s first televised leaders’ debates, the Liberal Democrat resurgence appears to have thrown the election wide open. Clegg presented his party as an insurgent force capable of delivering real change, and benefited from having no previous record in government to defend.
Yet while they might be outsiders when it comes to Westminster politics, the Lib Dems are very much an established part of local government, having controlled cities from Newcastle to Bristol and Liverpool to Leeds. So what are Liberal Democrats like when they hold power and influence at local level?
