Chess what? Yes, this is for real. Chess Boxing is a hybrid sport that combines chess with boxing in alternating rounds.
The sport was invented by French artist and filmmaker Enki Bilal in his comic book Froid Équateur in 1992. With the first event organised in 2003, chess boxing is apparently a fast growing sport, with large followings in London and Berlin, where most events take place.
If you fancy sampling this rare experience, there's a match in the old Scala building in King's Cross next weekend. (I've been wondering what was happening inside the Scala these days. Guess now I know). Tickets a snip at just £22.50 (£16.87 students).
