Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all

We are thinking of moving to Cheshunt

I have looked at all there is on line and crime stats etc but would find some 'first hand' advice helpful.

Has anyone lived there and can tell me what the community is like or any useful info about the area or what it was /is like to live there?

Many Thanks

Stuart

I grew up in Cheshunt (lived in Flamstead End), but left more than 10 years ago, so my recent personal experience is more limited, although I still visit friends and family there. Transport links from Cheshunt are great, with fast trains into Tottenham Hale taking less than 10 minutes, which is fine if you're walking distance from the station, but local bus services are of a rural quality and taxis are extortionate. Cheshunt has never been strong on restaurants and bars, although it is close enough to places like Hertford and Ware which have some better options - and London of course...

Cheshunt has a bit of a reputation after events such as World Cups/Euros, when people seem to travel to rampage or 'riot' at the Old Pond. I never found it to be a tolerant place, and witnessed much prejudice growing up; it's not a particularly diverse place and the BNP for example retain strong support and previously held a seat in Broxbourne.

More positives - schools have tended to be strong (although not sure about recent results) and lots of families in the area (although little to bring them together). The schools tend to have lots of land and are strong on sports. There's never been much for e.g. teenagers to do in the local area so they tend to 'hang out' - we all did. I imagine they've cracked down on the underage drinking since then! There is a leisure centre with a pool and also cinemas nearby (e.g. Enfield). Cheshunt park is huge for walks and games in the summer and has a golf course. There's also a sailing base. It's also only a short drive before you're out in the country where there are some ok pubs dotted about. You've already looked at safety stats; it always felt like a safe place. A lot would depend on which part of Cheshunt you're looking at. When I lived there, people used to go shopping to...Wood Green and Brent Cross!

And of course it's the home of Tesco so has a flagship store...
