Research commissioned by the BBC into the number of vacant shops in England, Wales and Scotland suggests our changing consumer habits, as well as the downturn, are transforming the face of our High Streets.

Supermarkets including the smaller 'Expresses' & 'Locals' are doing well, as are pound shops. Off licences are not. And there's much in between. Greater London averages over 11% retail space being currently vacant.

Not quite sure how we ended up with the high street we have.

It'll be interesting to see how the Localism Act pans out. The Bill specifically includes provision for local communities to protect local shops. I wonder if it'll help us influence for a more diverse Green Lanes, Harringay.

PS: Here's a report on London's small shops from the GLA.......and some commentary on it.

But will there be any funding to match the aspirations (if we can call them that) for aspects of the Localism Act. Cut backs there too you know. Check this from the so-called Civil Society minister. Hello private sector again.

Was there ever much? Local legislation thankfully needs little.
