Cash machine scamming at Tesco on Green Lanes
Was at Tesco's cash machine on Green Lanes today about 3.30 pm. The police were there - my local guys - and told me not to use the cash machine. I was a bit surprised but it turns out someone hoodlams have been sticking a contraption in the slot where you put your card. When you stick a card in the machine it appears as if the machine has swallowed your card. But that's the scam. Someone from the cafe next door or over the road has got your PIN number and will retrieve your card when you go inside the shop to find out if you can get it back.

I suspect attempts to place a similar device were made recently at the Sainsbury cash machines.
There is still evidence of scratches around the two slots, although the bezel, missing a few days ago, now appears to have been replaced.
Everyone using these local machines ought to check the slot for anything that doesn't look right.

As well as grabbing the card, which is useless on its own, it can copy your card without you noticing if they have added the necessary gizmo to the card-slot. They also need your PIN - so there will be a tiny transmitting camera installed somewhere along the top edge. By always masking the keypad as you type, they are thwarted. At least so far.
Search 'ATM scam' on Youtube for some scary videos, very useful consciousness-raisers.

Thanks for the warning. This was always my "safe to use" cashpoint.
It's the least intimidating one on our bit of Green Lanes. The one by the bust stop on the other side, opposite the Salisbury is just too scary. I guess I'll start getting my cash near work from now on.

I got done by this a couple of weeks ago, but hadn't managed to pin it down to that cashpoint.
They tried to use my card to spend £250 with O2, £96 with Ocado, £600 on flights with KLM, insurance with Domestic and General, phones4you and various others I can't recall.
Fortunately the bank were very good and none of the fraudulent stuff went through.
on Saturday I tried to use it again, but the guy in front of me was messing around with the slot (trying to get his card out, or investigating to see if it was tampered with I suspect, rather than tampering himself), so discretion became the better part of valour and i went over the road to Santander.

If it was for an Ocado delivery, wouldn't there have been an address? Do the banks / police ever investigate these things?
Apparently the banks lose 100s of millions like this a year but don't publish the figures as they don't like to admit they are vulnerable.

no doubt there was. I've sent a message to Glyn on the SNT and I'm rather hoping that by offering evidence, the police and the bank fraud team can work together and prosecute.
