Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As I reported back in May, Crouch End Studios, former home to Dave Stewart and once used by Bob Dylan, is up for redevelopment as flats.

The studios who have hosted many a famous name are currently owned by David Gray. The musician has applied to Haringey Council for planning permission to convert the building to flats.

The BBC reported Andrew Harrison, editor of Q magazine, as saying that the plans reflect a general decline in studios as young musicians now wield the technology to record music in their own homes.

The same report mentions that Producer Dave Stewart, who once lived with Annie Lennox in a flat adjoining the studios, where they recorded songs like Sweet Dreams, shared some memories about the studios on his Facebook page following news of the redevelopment plans.

"It has so many memories for me," he said. "Not just recording sessions. I would host evening soirees with poets, philosophers, musicians, etc.

"Dylan would turn up with his band and hold court," he continued, "or Joni Mitchell would play drums! Things have changed now. Music Scene is not the same, I understand him [David Gray] having to sell.

After the move was picked up by the Daily Telegraph and the BBC last week, an anonymous person or group has started an online campaign to try and save the studios. It is not clear what alternative they are proposing to owner Gray.
