Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Campaign for Safe Crossing by the Queen's Head
I'm pleased to say that my Lib Dem colleagues and I have now launched a campaign to obtain a pedestrian crossing for Green Lanes at its junction with Frobisher Road.
Councillors Karen Alexander and Carolyn Baker, with my help and that of several volunteers have already obtained a large number of signatures, and we have only just begun.
Residents will remember that although there have been many campaigns in the past which have been widely supported, these have not produced any results so far. Our intention, therefore is to get so many signatures on a petition that it will become impossible for those in power to ignore the very pressing need which exists here.
There is no safe crossing point for 200 metres in either direction, which means than many people taking their children to the primary school in Falkland Road have to choose between going well out of their way or braving the traffic.
Traffic moves swiftly in this part of Green Lanes, and pedestrians have to keep a lookout in several directions at once. Over the years a number of people have been injured here, and indeed I myself once saw a 10-year-old girl and her grandfather knocked down by a driver turning out of Frobisher Road.

Many thanks to the large number of people who signed our petition at the Green Lanes Festival.
You'll be glad to know that, following the many campaigns by local residents (including recently one by the Friends of Ducketts Common), the Council will be conducting a route review which is to include a speed survey and traffic count together with (it is hoped) consideration of the provision, or rather the non-provision, of pedestrian crossings in the area of the Frobisher Road/Green Lanes junction.
The Police Safer Neighbourhoods Team have also expressed interest in this issue.
There is, in addition, the possibility that as a temporary measure, a "phase" for the traffic lights will be introduced in which the lights are red in all directions. This would not be a complete solution, but it would help in the short term.
In order to ensure that the Council really does give this issue the priority which it deserves, I would ask that residents continue to support our petition. Once again, you can do so, by signing and returning the leaflet which was delivered to you a few weeks ago, by signing the petition when someone comes to your door, or by visiting my website as mentioned above.

David, I am very pleased you are campaigning for a safer crossing here as it is much needed. However, the junction of St Ann's Road and Harringay Road is similarly risky and crossing with young children a highly risky affair. Can you offer any advice on how to try to get this junction improved?

Thanks very much for your support for our petition.
The Journal has featured it this week, and I am hoping that it will gain more support from my website, in addition to the signatures which we have been able to get this weekend.
I'll be very interested in having a further look at the crossing you mention, not least because my family use it a great deal.
