Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Bye bye Banksy!
For a few days now I've suspected something was afoot with Turnpike Lane's Banksy; it's been surrounded by scaffolding and tarpaulin since Wednesday - and there was a security van present for much of that time.
This morning I had a sneaky look under said tarpaulin to find it had been removed. I spoke to the guy rendering the wall and he said that after repeated attempts to gouge it out, the owner of the Poundland building had decided to take steps to 'preserve' it. He wasn't sure where it's gone...one can only wonder if it's been sold. Sad to see it go - it was nice to have a landmark of sorts...

...so at lunch time today, when Sky were there, nothing much was happening. At some point between lunchtime and 7pm this evening this latest piece suddenly appeared. Has anyone had a close look? Is it sticky-back plastic? Is this Banksy's new style - I smell a rat...
This is making my head spin, but at least Wood Green is getting some world-wide news coverage for slightly more amusing reasons than usual!

I haven't walked round to see it but will tomorrow. I don't much care if it's 'genuine' or not (though Banksy does have a slightly recurring heart motif in some works so who knows?) I just love the idea that every graffiti artist in the Borough might come and add a little bit more each day. Dare them to chop down the whole wall and sell that! (Disclaimer I'm middle aged and law abiding so won't be tagging the wall myself!)

This road is my route home from the shops. Usually in the evenings it can be dodgy walking down there, it's nice now to have a nice buzz of people around (though I know it won't last).

The whole thing has now gone into high farce. It's hilarious! I agree with you doug & julia ... it has a life of it's own now. Maybe banksy turned up as a part of a camera crew ... as for the nun thing :)
If the sale has been pulled lets hope the council hasn't used scarce funds to secure it 'for the community'!

I think it's a poster. It seemed to be peeling off the wall this evening. Didn't stop two tv crews turning up as I walked by!

Seems fairly clear now that if you're a budding artist, and want some national/international recognition, this is the wall to cover. Will be sending my 4 year-old down with his crayons tomorrow!

The other banksy piece of art was also removed from sale.
BBC News24 is reporting the latest, with its cameras at Whymark Avenue.
News broken by HOL first of course (from Twittersphere). The networks just follow.The auctioneer Frederic Thut is reported to have said recently, "It's sad, because the majority of comments we have had are uneducated and people don't understand," he said. "We have a thick skin, but this is not the kind of publicity that we were looking for, and we're really not too keen for this. It may be that this affects our reputation, and that's not fair."

On her Twitter page the Dear Leader shares her pleasure that the Miami auction has not gone ahead - retweeting congratulations as they pour in. But this might just be a little premature of Cllr Claire Kober.
Because It seems likely that someone spent a lot of money to get a slab of Wood Green wall safely to Miami. And, according to the Daily Mirror there'd been a pre-auction bid of $400,000.
So will the owners give up their profit, and quietly ship the wall back to Poundland - all at their own expense? Or - as Matt asks - would they expect Haringey to cough up? Then - as Pam Isherwood comments - how will Banksy's immensely valuable works of art be safeguarded?
One comment on Twitter made me smile broadly. Mike Roving calls for Banksy to stencil Haringey Schools to ensure that Claire Kober fights equally hard for them!
