Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As someone who has been confused about the change to the clocks, every year, twice a year, for all my 50+ years I had a sudden thought.
If GMT (i.e. wintertime) is the norm, and it is the winter darkness that people are concerned about (Scots, farmers, parents, H+S bods etc) why don’t we have BWT (British Winter Time) instead of BST when it is already light enough for everyone?
Surely we change the clocks for the wrong half of the year, don’t we?

So I suggest
GMT from April to October
BWT from November to March

Is that really sensible (a flash of genius even) or have I completely missed the point of it all, again?

your comments appreciated.

Deleted stupid post. I think I confused myself :-)
I missed the 1968-'71 experiment when, legend has it, Scottish schoolchildren were mown down by the thousands in the dark mornings but they forgot to count the thousands who weren't mown down in the longer lighter evenings. At the time I was in the middle of the West African bush, close enough to the equator to know that day started suddenly at sunrise and ended even more abruptly at sunset all year round - and all too aware that if someone had siphoned off our generator fuel our chances of shedding some light on our heart of darkness were probably nil.

Now I've missed something even rarer - what John D calls his "stupid post". Is such a phenomenon within the realms of possibility? I'm haunted by the idea of this deleted rara avis winging its lonely orbit through the planets of countless universes. I think we should demand that this soi disant "stupid post" be reinstated.
oh, good, i thought it was me as it seemed back to front. but i still don't understand!
Lesley, an hour of daylight in the evening is worth more to GDP and lives saved than an hour in the morning. If the government can't get this one through, they're idiots.
Quite right John and kids in Scotland could start school at 10:00 instead of 09:00 in Winter if necessary -

Of course, we train our kids to get up in the morning - our school starts at 08:00 (kindergarten from 06:00) and they don't seem to have any serious problems with the darkness
As its people in England complaining all the time about the changing the clocks then surely any change to schools can be done in England - not Scotland.
Go ahead ministers in England and discuss till you are blue in the face but don't use Scotland as guinea pigs, use yourself for the change!
i think farmers and those up north could work when its light then stop when its dark.schools usually finnish at 330, its still light at 330 no matter what time of year, have i missed the point too? :)
As someone who absolutely detests getting up in the dark for almost four months of the year, I would like to make a plea to leave things as they are!
I detest young children and other vulnerable road users dying needlessly. I detest the massive extra amounts of energy consumed and hence carbon dioxide produced.

Some of you really are just parochial Luddites, aren't you?
Some of us think that simply expressing a personal preference shouldn't lay us open to the charge of being a child-killer amongst other insults. What makes you so judgemental?
If anything I called you Parochial Luddites, not child killers.
If I'm not mistaken John.. Because you are an hour behind most of Western and Central Europe anyway and because the Europeans tend to be earlier risers.. The UK economy misses out on two hours of business time in the morning and about one in afternoon.. The deals are all struck and done before all you pin stripes have even got to the top of the escalator at Bank/Canary Wharf station.. As the financial sector is now vital to the UKs economy, surely these points should be taken into consideration. Not to mention the environmental benefits

I would have thought common sense would say that if there are more fatalities in the dark in the evening, rather than in the morning, then school times should be adjusted.. starting and finishing earlier..? We compensate here for the working parents by having kindergarten open from 06:00-18:00 (In Berlin, two years are FOC) and schools are now staying open later so that kids can stay behind after lessons to do their homework rather than rushing home to the telly.. and anyway I thought the trend in the UK was for parents to drive their kids to school/pick them up anyway..

The current system of daylight saving doesn't really do it's job- it needs to be made more extreme.. to be of real benefit
