Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Well done to the local lads who run Brouhaha. Following the demise of Autograf Green Lanes, Brouhaha will be moving in to the vacated premises and doubling in size. Initially there are no plans to knock through - but watch this space in the future.

So how many units would you break The Salisbury and Iceland into?

(PS: By the way, that's a pretty miserable response to some good news from two of the few Harringay shopkeepers who actually live in Harringay (and grew up here as it happens). Isn't it great to see two locals doing so well on the high street? Isn't there a time and a place for certain comments, Nick?).

Absolutely Hugh - this is great news! Well done to Brouhaha!

I agree with you about diversity, Nick, as I've been writing for the past ten years. But sometimes, Nick, isn't it just time to celebrate some good news and leave qualifying comments to another time and place? (Though for my part I have no unspoken comments about this particular news. I think it's just outright good news).

I think the reality is anything that opens that isn't a Turkish restaurant owned by Turkish businessmen is a miracle and is generally met with a positive reception. It's even more of a miracle if they survive. General consensus is we have enough of the same kind of restaurants. We don't have a glut of bars such as Brouhaha, hence the lack of complaints about their expansion.

I'd agree. I personally didn't go to Autograph, as it's menu wasn't for me due to dietary requirements. Was glad for the diversity it provided on GL though.

Pubs were always the centre of the community. Admittedly less so in London than in provincial towns and cities. And one that has more space in is a good thing IMO.

The bookies are probably going to go away, with the changes afoot for FOBT and the resulting profitability.

But isn't there a financial incentive to do this? For instance Kofali Hot Nuts have two premises in Harringay and I presume pay two lots of business council tax. But if they had one door and two shop fronts like many of the Turkish Restaurants, wouldn't that be just one lot of business council tax?

No it's done on area occupied by the business rather than number of doors

I am so happy for those boys. Their parents at the hardware store gave me the heads up a few weeks ago and also said there is supposed to be some wine bar opening up on Green Lanes??? Will miss my peroigi fix but can always hit the autograph on Green Lanes. In the meantime I look forward to their big unveiling and drinking their fantastic cocktails.

Congratulations to Brouhaha for a fab bar, great atmosphere and lovely Japanese food. Can't wait to see the new venue - I see there is live music on Friday.

Green Lanes is thriving - I have lived here for decades and its better than its ever been.

There used to be a fish shop but not enough customers! New furniture shop about to open too - should be interesting. Only real down side has been the growth in betting shops - maybe these could be transformed into community centres, book shops etc.

These newer bars are great success stories for our high st, obviously popular with locals. People travel from all over London and visit from further afield, esp for the live music at places like Jam in a Jar. Well done to the lads at Brouhaha. You've worked hard to get where you are and deserve greater success going forward. Maybe start a little Turnpike Lane station type book exchange so Nick Michael can share words of joy & encouragement :)

It's becoming very hard to get the the high street units that are empty filled with good shops/bars so this is great news. I think it's not fair to talk about diversity when they only have a small unit to start with, compared to other restaurants nearby which have huge spaces.  Like others, I do miss autograph, but this is very welcome. I just hope that the success of Green Lanes spreads to the much needed Turnpike Lane/Wood Green area, where a big number of the shops are either empty, temporary occupied or selling crap. Exception of Tarsish, which I love

Really pleased for the local lads. They have done a really good job in there . Supply and demand and if the dreamland is there, then makes sense to extend. Good luck

on a similar note. Jam in the Jar are meant to be extending into the next door shop as they also seem to be doing really well with live music every night. And on a Saturday night it’s a really tight squeeze
