Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This one goes out to all the techie people who spend time on here - you know who you are.

We've had BT Broadband for some time, but we're not terribly happy with it. The service drops out a lot and as we're big users of the internet, we've now just had a Fair Usage warning from them. So, somewhat reluctantly because it's a big hassle, we are considering changing service provider.

I read the lengthy discussions about the Virgin service that went on at the start of the year, which seemed to imply that Virgin isn't all that reliable round here, but that changes might be underway. Any news on that - has it got better?

We were considering 02 but note that their top speed round here is 3.5mps - as I say, we're big users of broadband and we'd like to download more movies, and 3.5mps is a bit rubbish. Does anyone reliably get fast speeds in Harringay? Who with?

I'm not particularly techie myself - anything else I should be worrying about?

Any help gratefully received, friends...

Our Virgin Broadband is much better now. I suspect they had to boost the signal at the top of the street (i.e. spend money on infrastructure) so waited for a customer to get pissed off enough about it dropping out regularly.

I have the 20Mbs package and easily get more than 8Mbs. Actually, I've not checked in a while so it may be better now.

Virgin knew very well when I was chasing them that my alternatives were not that great around here.
I think John is right. For Virgin (the only cable option available) it depends on how well they maintain their (grey) boxes in each street. They ram more & more customer connections into them and I guess eventually connections start getting affected. In our road it has been fine up until recently, then we had one or two connection problems. So we're monitoring the situation at the moment and hoping it doesn't turn into a Lausanne Rd repeat.

When it's working Virgin is by far the fastest internet connection available.
If you don't want to go down the cable route, this article will be of interest, the results of an independent survey published today:

Virgin's always been pretty reliable for us - just hate those times when you do have to call in to the Bombay call centre - rarely enlightening.
