Blanket 20mph speed limit

Of course Haringey should have a blanket 20mph limit. If the arguments for making side streets 20mph stand up (massive reduction in the number of accidents, much less damage each time an accident does happen) then it should be applied to main roads as well. As some of us said when Brian Haley put up all those "20" signs at the ends of so many streets.
Perversely this might also result in greater traffic sppeds overall - there is no benefit in arriving at the next set of red lights at 30mph - just coast up gently at 20 and not even have to stop.
And what about the anomalous situations like Ferme Park Road where the parked cars are now on the pavement to speed traffic flow, and the road is full of enormous, almost impassable humps (especially if you are coming down the steps of a W3) to slow it down again.
Traffic cameras represent good law. There is a very clear reason for the law (there must be speed limits - travelling at 100mph on a side street would be absurd), it is very clear when the law has been broken (traffic cameras are almost invariably accurate) and enforcement is a piece of cake (the computer sends out a piece of paper)

According to the Standard yesterday some councils are getting rid of their speed cameras, because they can no longer afford to operate them. It seems the idea that they do nothing but generate cash for Councils isn't quite the truth. More here.
I've a lot of time for the idea of a blanket 20 mph speed limit in residential areas. But Lynne Featherstone's Facebook piece implies that this will eliminate the need for other traffic calming measures, which surely is wishful thinking?

Alison, I hope Lynne hasn't become Lammy - i.e. feeling constrained to say things she's never believed just because she's a Home Office minister.
To suggest that if we get rid of all the traffic calming measures on Ladder roads, leaving only the signs that say ours is a blanket 20mph Zone, seems worse than wishful thinking.
