Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Events at venues across the borough marking this year’s Black History Month began yesterday.

An exhibition celebrating one man's transformation from slavery to heading an American dynasty will kick off Black History Month, an extensive programme of events in October highlighting the rich art and culture of Haringey’s black community.

Making Freedom: The Life of Venture Smith, marks the path of a slave who bought himself, his wife and four children out of slavery and went on to accumulate wealth and establish a family dynasty in America.

The exhibition will be at the Marcus Garvey Library, Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, Philip Lane, from 2 October to 30 November.

This is just one of a number of events and activities - including a dedicated children's programme, hosted by Haringey libraries to celebrate Black History Month. Topics addressed in the programme include poetry, the Tottenham Riots, health, education, music, racism and genealogy. A booklet with details and listings will be in libraries from 28 September and is published on the council website.
