Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all,

I live quite close to the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham. I keep hearing about shows and classes happening there but when I check the website there is no information about anything...at all.

There are two performances listed but both of these have passed as they were in February and March and under weekly activities, courses, exhibitions and Festivals and Events there is absolutely nothing.

Does anyone know if it is just a rarely updated website or is just nothing going on?

Thanks,

Sarah

Sarah, this is puzzling. From time to time, when I've looked at their website I've found events and classes listed. And prompted by your posting, that includes today - 24 April. Have you spoken to anyone there? Or asked to go on their emailing list?

The Bernie Grant Arts Centre has a substantial and regular public subsidy. But given the horrendous cuts being made in Council services, this cannot continue. A fact which the Centre's Trustees will appreciate more than anyone.

Hi Alan,

Very puzzling and still happening. When I use your link I can see exactly what you mean but using this link it brings you to 'what's happening' section and as you will see there is nothing listed under any of the headings.  If I go to the home page in your link it's even showing a different home page too! Very peculiar.

Thanks though, definitely answers the question!

I phoned the Bernie Grant Centre, Sarah. They will take a look at this thread and see what the glitch is with their website. In the meantime, do contact them and ask to go on their mailing list.

Sorry to be provocative Alan, but I'm afraid I have to agree with you. Some of my informants on the ground have suggested this big building may be a white elephant. Were there not promises made some time ago that the centre would be self-financing and require no public funding?

No need to be mysterious, Clive. If you or your "informants on the ground"  want hard information then start with the public sources - the Charity Commission and Companies House Registry.

If you have questions write to the Trust who I'm sure will be glad to help.

Nor do I think there's any mystery about the funding pressures and cuts faced by arts organisations across the whole country.

Alan, I knew you'd be upset if I agreed with you, but I'm mystified as to why you didn't respond to the question,

Were there not promises made some time ago that the centre would be self-financing and require no public funding?

Made by Cllr. George Meehan?

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I dunno, Clive. My copy of the Collected Sayings of Cllr George Meehan is out on extended loan.

Anyway, it's too early in the morning for silly games. If you know the answer post it. If you don't, ask George.  And while you're asking questions include the Trustees of the Bernie Grant Centre.

Agree, promises by politicians come under the heading 'silly games'. I still agree with you that the substantial and regular public subsidy cannot indeed, should not, continue. It's long been time this matter was brought up.

Hi Sarah,
They do have couple of things going on.
Please have a look at this link (it's part of the event I have just posted here)
http://www.berniegrantcentre.co.uk/index.php?plid=495
But I do agree, the website needs a bit of work and kept up to date regularly.
Will be meeting someone who works there on Saturday so will pass your feedback on.
Cheers
Taslima

Thanks Taslima,

I think there might be a problem with the website, Alan directed me to the same website but there were listings. When I went to their website through the google search results it showed nothing at all but instead of going into the home page, I clicked on the what's happening linkshown in google and it only displayed two shows for Feb and March - very strange.

If you are seeing them on Saturday it may definitely be worth mentioning.

The website may be broken, but when I called in there in-person the other week there were only three flyers for three, separate up-coming productions of visiting companies on the desk. The centre doesn't seem to have some over-arching programme.

It's instructive to compare and contrast this with the soon to open Park Theatre in Finsbury Park.
