Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Royal Mail pillar box on Beresford Road at Harringay Passage has been sealed by Royal Mail for a few days. Does anybody know why? The postie says there are no strikes and he does not know why it has been sealed; none of the residents I've spoken to know either.

There has been no notification to  residents from Royal Mail of this - hopefully - temporary closure.

It goes without saying that this is inconvenient for people who regularly use this handy post box, particularly as it is located at the junction with the Passage.

It's also a Victorian era postbox - a local landmark, if ever there was one!

Thanks - I was aware of this, but just trying to bring it back in to view as that thread had gone lukewarm and the comments from the local posties had been made during the last week. I don't think people actually realise what a negative effect these closures will make to their day to day lives as far as post-related issues are concerned.

And it is still sealed after the weekend - only to find a postie in a van pull up to collect the post from the box, frutsrated to find it is still sealed - "nobody tells us anything"; so the posties don't know which boxes are sealed and go round all the boxes every day, rather than visit only the boxes which are open-able.

Is this efficient management by Royal Mail? You'd think they'd have told all the postal collection people which boxes were inaccessible to make their routes time- and fuel-  efficient.

The postie did say that a bunch of keys had been stolen when a van was broken in to, but that there is a spare set of keys which means than no post is left in the boxes when they seal them. OK.

So when are the mystery sub-contractors going to replace the locks? 5 weeks and counting.

And it is 5 December with the box still sealed, despite a written assurance from Royal Mail (a letter dated 15 Nov) that the work would be completed around 19 November and an email from another person at Royal Mail Customer Services on 17 November saying the work has started.

This is a completely unacceptable delay from Royal Mail. It is now around 2 months that the box has been sealed - and apparently others in the area.

I spoke to the postie who came to empty the box this week. He said that he had the key but did not know why it was sealed. It gets more and more curious. My kinder self says that this is a cock up and they have forgotten to remove the seal.

Finally! On Wednesday 12 December I saw that the letter box had unsealed - it only took about 2 months from when first noticed (mid-October), via many contacts with (first reported 1 Nov) and false promises from Royal Mail Customer Service! An essential part of the local infrastructure has been re-established.
