Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Royal Mail pillar box on Beresford Road at Harringay Passage has been sealed by Royal Mail for a few days. Does anybody know why? The postie says there are no strikes and he does not know why it has been sealed; none of the residents I've spoken to know either.

There has been no notification to  residents from Royal Mail of this - hopefully - temporary closure.

It goes without saying that this is inconvenient for people who regularly use this handy post box, particularly as it is located at the junction with the Passage.

It's also a Victorian era postbox - a local landmark, if ever there was one!

How odd.

There is a postbox on Falkland Road right near the passage and another one at the bottom of Raleigh Road/Willoughby Road which you could use in the meantime.

This happened to the one at the top of Hewitt, then it disappeared altogether.

Time to set up a bidding consortium for the 'Beresford Box'?

Yes what did happen to the Hewitt post box? It was jolly useful!

It was deemed surplus to requirements and removed.

Boo, hiss!!

Good news! I spoke to Royal Mail Customer Service (0845 774 0740 - don't use the 0870 number!) and they contacted the Collection Manager at the Sorting Office. He said that the Royal Mail driver has lost the keys to this pillar box and the locks are going to be changed in 2-3 days time and then normal service will be resumed.

Pillar box at top of Mattison listing precariously eastwards. Who were those engineers who worked on the Pisa tower over several centuries? We may need them soon.

Speak to Customer Service! (0845 774 0740 - don't use the 0870 number!) You never know - they might action a repair - probably not the original Pisa engineer, but ...

Adam Coffman has just tweeted the following:

Seems like there may be a bit of a pattern here?

I've chased up the inaction on the Beresford Rd pillar box 3 times -  they still swear that they are waiting for a specially made lock and parts from a subcontractor, although it has been a month or more since it was sealed.

How come all the other letter boxes in the area are still working (apart from the new blockage which Adam reports - is it sealed or blocked by a letter?) if a whole bunch of keys was allegedly lost by a driver? And how did they fit the seal - from the outside or the inside? The latter would mean they would have had to open the letter box to fit it ... And is there post marooned inside the letter box since the last collection?

Conspiracy theory? Never!

OK, I've had a letter dated 15 Nov from the Customer Service Advisor that I spoke to as follows, plus an email from the other one I spoke with saying the same thing:

"Thank you for contacting Royal Mail regarding sealed Post Boxes in your area. We have contacted the Collections Manager who has advised the installation of new locks for these boxes should be completed this weekend. and the boxes unsealed. The Manager also advised that all mail was collected from the boxes prior to them being sealed. We apologise for the delay in resolving this issue and for any inconvenience caused."

We are watching this space!

On another related  and very serious issue, two of our posties confirm that they have ben told that the Tottenham Lane sorting office opposite Hornsey railway station will close in March and the service moved to Hornsey Rd. How inconvenient is that for people, esp those without cars in the Harringay and The Ladder area to collect packages and equally for posties to get their post up to Harringay and The Ladder for delivery every day?
