Following an idea I've been discussing with my current group of wine appreciators, I'm putting together a single evening course called Behind the Label, which through supping on six wines from around the world is going to explain things like:
- The difference between varieties, appellation s and producers
- The three different types of producer; co-ops, domaines, négociants
- The difference between varietal labelling and appellation labelling
- Other key information about a wine (sweet or dry, late harvest, ageing...) and the terms often used to describe these attributes
- How wines are branded, so you can understand if the brand you recognise is a variety, an appellation, a producer or a whole wine region
- How wines are are labelled around the world and how all the above information can be recognised on a label, this includes examples from various different Countries, each with their own particular labelling quirks.
As per the other one night courses I run (like Sherry Night) it will cost £40 for the evening and run for about 2 hours (1 hour 45 plus 15 mins for questions / chat afterwards). Course notes and superior snacks (nuts, olives, almonds) are of course provided!
I'm going to run the course on three different evenings so I can get as many of you in as possible (maximum of 12 per evening). The dates I'm running the evening are:
- Wednesday 30th November
- Tuesday 6th December
- Wednesday 7th December
If you are interested in coming, then please let me know which of the evenings you'd rather come to (the content and wines are the same each evening) and I'll put your name down. It should be a fun and informative night and it would be great to see some of you HoLers there!.
Best,
Hugo.
