BBM – the undoing of the riot organisers?
AFTER the current rioting and looting die down, the police may have a better-than-expected chance of gathering hard evidence, identifying and prosecuting the organisers.
It appears one of the main ways that the targeting of particular shops has been organised, has been via the Blackberry Messenger Service (BBM).
But this is not quite so private as Blackberry users thought: RIM, the company that make this early smartphone, has said it will co-operate with the police in tracking down the criminal users of Blackberry.
It could be an appropriate irony if the very means of organising riots was the way to conviction for same.
This could prove to be ideal evidence in court. There will be a will to do this, but one only hopes the courts will mete out severe punishment.

Matt, great ideas. They have to follow up, there will be a public outrage if they don't. Take the benefits and council flats off these idiots, and give the housing and funds to those who have lost everything in the riots.
Let them sit under a bridge and play with their loot, it's not like they won't have clothes..
Good on RIM for cooperating, hopefully Twitter and Facebook will follow suit. Apparently loot is being photographed and bragged about on Facebook. Shows the brain capacity of these people.

Blackberry criminality (Google results).
Given the important role of this early smart phone in co-ordinating attacks, it seems a little ironic that most of the mobile phone stores in Wood Green Shopping City were broken into. Are these early adopters wanting an upgrade?

I've got a 10 year old dumbphone. If I could afford a smartphone, I'd probably go for the next gen of the iPhone.
But before acquiring it I would expect (a) to be able to afford to purchase it (b) to be able to afford to run it.
A tiny, nasty minority of today's yoof expect to have all of everything at once - even if it means stealing and wrecking other's livelihoods.
As a Berliner, you probably didn't hear an interview on R4 this morning with one yoof, questioned about any concern he had for punishment, if caught. He admitted he was involved. The points he made:
- I'm a first offender
- I'd be let off with a caution
- The prisons are overflowing
- I might get an ASBO, but so what?
This is the kind of rationality that leads to no-cost mobile phone upgrades. Until there is fear of detection and fear of meaningful punishment, we can expect more of this lawlessness.

I can read , hear and see everything you can.. thanks to iplayers itv players and expat shields.. I listened all Monday evening to BBC Radio London & LBC ..
and saw with horror this morning the 250? men in 'white shirts' in Enfield protecting their 'women & children' as well as hearing the MP for Bexley talking about the English Defence League out and about in Eltham..
In actual fact, we get your media, but you know virtually nothing about us and rely on IMO 'Dodgy' BBC reporting--

I confess I have missed entirely all coverage from any sources about any rioting in Berlin. I'm sure that, in any event, the German police wouldn't tolerate such lunacy. Any comment about the key points made in that interview with the yoof in England though?
