Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I just got back from Finsbury Park where I was quite surprised to see a group of about 15 boys/men playing basketball in the court there - obviously no social distancing!. I know that people are allowed to exercise but I'm pretty sure team sports like that would be discouraged at the moment. Not sure why the court would even be open to allow them play.

I'm pretty familiar with the rules and that was my understanding which was why I was surprised to see such a flagrant violation of the rules. They were clearly not all from the same household and they were not social distancing. This sort of thing allows the disease to spread fast which defeats this whole lockdown exercise

With respect Tris I don't think you really appreciated my tone. I am perfectly aware of the regulations and am more than capable of going to authoritative sources to find the correct information but thanks for setting me straight. You can't blame the government totally for this as people were breaking the rules even before the easing up

The rules are perfectly clear.

What is lacking is a willingness to obey them.

Do you really think so? You can play golf and tennis and basketball? You ever play tennis or basketball on your own?

This seems part of the herd immunity strategy which the government has not abandoned. Relax lockdown but tell people to 'be alert' . Second spike..thousands more deaths...

The rules are clear as mud btw! And I think it's deliberate, but that's a different matter.

Saw people playing tennis in Downhills Park last night. Was surprised. The barriers were still there btw, but they must have pushed through. In both instances I however feel they have not broken lock down rules - it seemed to be a family and a couple. With tennis, you can social distance quite well. Different matter when 15 people play basketball.

I was also surprised to see the basketball courts being used by large groups. Even more surprised to see a group playing a football match further down the park, 22 men (plus subs)... surprised is the wrong word tbh, but it was upsetting.

Yup rules are clear as mud which I’m sure was the government intention. Expect to be locked back down here in London in a few weeks. Rubbish. Although really hoping I’m wrong

You think the Government's intention is to prolong the crisis with the attendant destruction of the economy, reduction in tax revenue, huge unemployment and paralysis in the health services ?

I don't think so.

The Government's initial plan was to let the virus run its course and get it over and done with. It's probably still the best strategy to minimise the economic damage, but they realised that the number of deaths wouldn't go down very well. Would you really be surprised if privately they're still backing it?

Hi KP. I think I met you and spoke to you about this in Finsbury Park the other day.  It is definitely not okay for groups of people clearly not from the same household to be mixing without social distancing so I'm with you on this.  Yes the rules could have been made clearer as a lack of absolute clarity seems to have given some folk carte blanche to just do what they like.  Even since before the latest changes I've seen so many games of football and large picnics going on in Downhills Park as well.  But how to stop it?  Are any council enforcers patrolling? I don't see any.  Maybe a phone number that we could call to report these dangerous situations could be published.  Our 'staying alert' is pointless without some kind of easily accessible enforcement.

Hi gwyn247 - I don't think we've met as I haven't spoken to anyone in person at the park. I have also seen the football games and picnics for quite a while so people have been ignoring the rules - even when they were clear! Last weekend a man with a megaphone was walking around telling people that if they were not exercising they should leave the park. There were so many people lying around sunbathing, having picnics. I guess there aren't enough people around to patrol but they do need some kind of presence to stop people acting like everything is back to normal when it clearly isn't
