This Sunday 20 March, leading expert in Balinese Kecak - Andy Channing - will be running a Kecak Workshop at Southbank Centre from 1-3pm. Tickets £10 and £5 concessions. Kecak workshops are really fun and a great way to further explore the music of Indonesia. This workshop is open to anyone over the age of 10 years and is fun for all the family!
Kecak, also known as the 'monkey chant', is a vocal equivalent of the gamelan percussion ensemble from Bali. Kecak is primarily used for storytelling.
Participants sit in circles and recreate the rhythmic effect of the gamelan with interlocking voices and simple movements. The workshop is suitable for adults and children over ten years of age, and no previous musical experience or knowledge of the gamelan or kecak is necessary.
Participants are required to sit on the floor at various points, so comfortable clothing is advisable (chairs can be provided for those uncomfortable on the floor). Workshop participants will then be invited to perform at 3.30pm in The Clore Ballroom to launch the Balinese Kecak Extravaganza - a Big Sing for all ages - and encourage members of the public to join in to create a massed Kecak event.
