Last Friday saw a gathering of about fifty people to celebrate an award made to Harringay Traders' Association Chairman, Shefik Mehmet, to recognise the work he has done serving the community in North London.

The 'Lifelong Achievement' award from the Centre for Turkish Studies (Ceftus) was given recognise the tireless work of Shefik Mehmet in serving his local community for almost fifty years.

The award was formally presented on April 15th at the Ceftus Community Achievement Awards in the Park Lane Sheraton Hotel. Friday's lunch at Selale restaurant on Harringay's Green Lanes was an opportunity for a more local celebration.

Local residents, traders and politicians came together for a slap-up Turkish meal and a chance for existing local relationships to be maintained and new ones forged. Thankfully speeches were kept short, but the gathered community didn't stint on showing genuine appreciation for Mr Mehmet's work for Harringay and the wider Haringey community.

In addition to the work he does as Chairman of the Harringay Traders' Association, Mehmet also works with local police to defuse clashes between ethnic gangs. and is a governor at a local college.

A toast to you, Mr Mehmet, from Harringay Online.
