Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Somebody tried to break into our house on Burgoyne Road this lunchtime. They failed to break the lock on our front door, but they made a bit of a mess of it. Did anybody happen to see anything suspicious between about 11.50am and 1.30pm?

Didn't see anything suspicious when I was on my way up Burgoyne to the station at 10.30.

Good thing your locks held. Did the police have any further information? Is there a spate of this at the moment?
Only that they thought it was an opportunist attempt and that he'd used a crowbar. It happened sometime between 12 and 1.30, as that was when my wife nipped out...

Thank heaven for sturdy locks
hello Phil.

so sorry to hear that you have been, targeted, the reason I am replying to you is that my friend just called me to say that someone tried to break into his house on Burgoyne Rd today as well, same they did not get in but damaged the door, he lives at number 62. wonder if it is the same shit that tried your place. I will put it on line as he does not have access to internet.
best wishes.

Marie
Sorry to hear that, Marie Elizabeth. Did your friend contact the police? They gave us plenty of advice on making our house more secure, which was very helpful. And they can probably work out whether it was the same person responsible...
Hi Marie I've just replied to your other thread and just realised it's the same attempted break in. I live downstairs from your friend.
We did call the police and they came round late last night.

We had a burglary early evening on Sunday 28 Nov. They smashed the small Victorian painted glass on top of the front door and opend the latch. Unfortunately the other lock wasn't locked. They smashed the ground floor flat door frame and stole lap tops etc. We think they watched someone go out and nipped in. The police have been round. Double lock the doors.

Grim; sorry to hear that. Close to home for me so a handy reminder to take care. Did the police say anything about the use of the old panel above the door to gain access? Anything we can/should do?
Well we had all the numerous visits by police, forensics & safety officers and insurance, each with their own pearls of wisdom. It's very unusual to use that method of entry; to break that particular glass and reach down to the latch. You can put sticky plastic on windows, but those are painted on the inside, so the plastic would have to be on the outside.
Some of the general things they said were:
don't leave anything valuables that can be seen from outside on display in the house
don't leave bricks or stones in the garden
always double lock the door when you go out
dusk to dawn lights are more effective than movement sensitive lights outside
put a radio on when you're out
get timer switches on lights for when you're out
you could put a London bar in a door frame if suitable
get insured
realise the fear of crime is greater than the possibility of being a victim of crime.
