Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We seem to have done endless trips to the tip with car fulls of rubble since we moved to the ladder three years ago and I was digging again at the weekend, breaking up a section of old path, seems to be made up of a mix of concrete, rubble, bricks and general rubbish. There was also some thin grey corrugated strips, hard and very brittle but seemingly of a fibrous construction.

Does anyone know if this is asbestos? I know a lot of the gardens in the ladder had the same sort of paths around the edge so wonder if anyone else has come across it. Would like to know as you need to dispose of it separately and I can't really find much useful on the web.

Thanks!

Check Haringey Council web site. Go to A-Z section and click asbestos. There is information there and a link to City of London site that may arrange collection for free.
You and me both. It probably is asbestos, and if you take it near a council tip/recycling centre, they freak out! You need to contact the Hazardous Waste Collection and Disposal Service (based in Upper Thames St EC4) on 0207 332 3433 to get it collected. They will advise how it needs to be wrapped/labelled etc., before they will come and get it. Try not to break it, as it is the loose fibres that are problematic, although I believe it is only prolonged exposure which is dangerous. My understanding that this is not the highly toxic blue asbestos that needs professional removal.
