Run by Caravan Arts, ‘art soup’ is a five week course on art and design history – "from the sublime to the ridiculous, the known to the obscure". Courses are aimed at anyone who wants to find out more about modern art, in the comfort of a favourite Green Lanes (Newington Green) venue and home of artisan crafts, T&SHOP.
Over the 5 weeks, the course will cover the period from 1860 to 1950, including major Western movements and styles and examining the role of artists in the turbulent political and social periods of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The course will take a critical slant on traditional art historical approaches. Participants will be introduced to relevant discourses in art history and visual culture, and through this will develop tools to analyse artworks.
The course will include:
1. Manet/Impressionism/Post Impressionism
2. Cubism/German Expressionism/Futurism
3. Russian Constructivism, the Bauhaus and Abstraction
4. Dada and Surrealism
5. Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art
The organisers promise that sessions will be fun, informative and interactive, presenting new ways of reading artworks that shaped society from the 19th century to today.
