Are bicycles supposed to stick to the 20mph speed limit?

The law is very clear that speed limits only apply to motorised vehicles. If you want that changed then I would suggest you start up a petition on the government's petition website rather than troll on here.

I have a vague recollection of a cyclist clocked by the police at 60mph
- An ubercyclist, down hill with the wind behind him - i think he got done or at least taken to court, which is why it made the news.
this was a very long time ago, 20yrs or more.

The only appropriate offences are careless or dangerous cycling. Cyclelaw web site the results only appear to be relatively low fines.

How exactly am I trolling, John? Going the wrong way down a one street does apply to cyclists, does it not?

There's actually a campaign by the LCC to allow that London wide. It's allowed in the City. After all, one way systems were introduced for motor vehicles.
I thought you were questioning the speed that the cyclist was doing more than the direction they were going in.

Yeah! he'd built his own bike - was practicing for some record attempt on public roads i think.

There is a local byelaw limiting cyclists speeds in Richmond Park, other than that I can only think that they got him for the offence of "cycling furiously", which IMHO, they should ping more cyclists for, especially on the footpath.

I've always assumed that as cyclists are road users they should stick to the rules of the road, speed limits, one way systems and traffic lights included. I'm very surprised to learn that this not the law.
I have seen some two way cycle lanes along the side of a one way street in town, but they are clearly marked and have 'look both ways' signs at crossings to make it clear to pedestrians.

Cyclists are not supposed to ride on the pavement or go through red lights. They are supposed to have lights when cycling after dark.

A friend of mine from school who lives locally has some horrific injuries that could well be life altering because someone in an SUV didn't think to look in their side mirror before moving sharply into the bus lane. Perhaps we could concentrate on the careless drivers before we begin yet another tedious round of "cyclists = evil" on here again?
One day we will run out of oil and all be on bicycles.
