The construction of Crossrail through the heart of London has resulted in one of the most extensive archaeological programmes ever undertaken in the UK.

This month crossrail’s archaeology exhibition opened, offering a glimpse into London’s history.

Rare and priceless finds are displayed including a skeleton from the St Bethlehem Hospital burial ground underneath Liverpool Street. The burial site was used between 1569 and the mid-18th Century for Bedlam’s patients and local residents.

Roman artefacts and remnants of Britain’s industrial heritage will also be on display.  Unique exhibits include medieval ceramic wig curlers, 17th Century gravestone markers and medieval skates made from animal bone.

One geological find, extremely rare 55 million-year-old amber, will also be on show along with a piece of mammoth jaw bone.

The exhibition is being held at Crossrail’s Visitor Information Centre at Tottenham Court Road from 2 October to 27 October on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 7pm and Saturdays from 10am to 5pm. Crossrail’s Tottenham Court Road Visitor Information Centre is located at 16-18 St Giles High Street, WC2H 8LN (behind Centre Point, opposite Denmark Street).

Thanks to Lesley Ramm for bringing this to my attention.
