Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

APPLY to Take Part in Haringey's Budget Consultation - yup, you read it right, APPLY

I'm not sure that I'm exactly recommending this because I have to admit to being a sceptic when it comes to the efficacy of responding to a Haringey consultation, but I'm certainly endorsing the process in principle.

If we don't take the opportunity offered to try and influence, how can we carp later and imagine the rosy glow of self-justification of carping after being ignored at a consultation.

I was rather surprised to see that this is an invitation only event. I'm assuming that it's invitation on application, rather than any sort of filter being applied.

I feel I ought to go, but I fear wasting my time on a cosmetic exercise.

So my question to the universe is THIS.

If, however, the choice is easier for you and you want to go, just click here to apply.

Hugh, I think you're right to highlight the word "Apply".

I think we all know that this being a Consultation run by Haringey (of which I've seen a few), it will be meaningless, but in some ways its amusing. Have our elected representatives run out of ideas? "Apply" seeks to bureucratize it and reminds us unwashed peasants that, at the end of day the council are the bosses, who reserve the right to take no notice at all and in fact that is the likelihood. It smacks of preparing a list of Known Troublemakers, for Future Reference!

I think Brian Haley was overheard to say that "we have to be seen to be consulting [about CPZs]" and it's likely that the appearance of listening is what this is about. (Possbily designed or suggested by the propaganda division).

"Budget planning is a complex process says Cllr Charles Adje, cabinet member for resources". And Cllr Adje is about the last person who should head up this process – Adje having wasted enormous sums of Other People's Money in this Borough. We shall see how long he remains in office.

My advice to them would be to curtail the activities of the council's out-of-control propaganda department, now spending at an unprecedented rate. I don't know what the entire department's budget is, but Haringey Pravda, er, People magazine alone burns cash at a rate of between £300,000 to £400,000 per annum. This could be spent better elsewhere.
Tom, I think what you've said is correct, but wholly irrelevant.

By this reasoning, any waste (including the £10m+ on Tech Refresh) is okay, as long as you compare it with the total annual budget.

If you followed the link at the end (above) you'll see I suggested that all (even just most would help) of this particular, wasteful, budget be transferred to Childrens Services, where it appears to be needed and might make difference.

The £400,000 of our taxes which you seem to regard as a bagatelle, would pay for approximately one thousand Child Protection Order applications. Sometimes only a handful would save a life.

By the way, our Better Haringey Three Star Beacon Council has in the last hour or so, sacked Shoesmith without pay.
Before Haringey People we just had the local rags getting stuck into the council all the time. If I was them I would have done something very similar to Haringey People. All the other boroughs do it, although I notice that Camden's is on newsprint and has no plastic bag...
