Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Any ideas about what is causing the clicking noise on our telephone landline?

Our digital landline telephone has been plagued by a clicking noise for about the last year. It is worse for the person phoning in than it is for us, but is very noticeable and we'd like to work out what is causing it. It occurs during most, but not all, phone calls.

Does anyone else have this problem? We wondered if it was to do with our wireless network, but it happens even when it is switched off - but might it be caused by other local wireless networks?

We have a single microfilter plugged into our main telephone socket, but not into the secondary one that our digital phone is plugged into.

Apologies if this is too technical - just wondered if anyone else had similar problems, or had any ideas about where we should start. I've done a google search but just got lots of jokes about wire taps!

sounds to me like the news of the world are listening in...!
I had the same problem and called my service provider. They sent an engineer who fixed the problem.
What exactly do you mean by your digital phone? A VoIP handset? A wireless handset?

You need to ensure a mircofilter is plugged into each and every phone socket no matter what you have pluged into it - this includes your router. If you don't it will affect line quality.

You also need to rule out that your exisiting microfilter hasn't failed, so once you get another one unplug everything except the standard phone into the master socket, check the line quality then if ok add additional devices incrementally checking at each stage.

If you still have an issue after this report it to your service provider as a line fault, they should be able to test remotely and send an engineer out if they detect a problem.
Forgot to say that each phone line can only handle a finite numer of devices plugged into it up to the maximum line impedence. Each device that you plug into your phone line should be approved [used to have a green sticker along with technical details] to ensure it is compatible.

Your phone line is basically a low powered electrical circuit, this is how you phone "rings" when someone calls you.
Thanks everyone. It was the news of the world after all.

Inkjetpack - especial thanks. I realise now that we do have a microfilter plugged in to all our phone sockets, and have just checked them in the master socket so make sure one isn't broken. All seems well now, which doesn't really make sense, but there are some days where the problem doesn't really happen so perhaps today is one of those.
