Antidote - Inspiring new Roof at Kings Cross - Wow!
Thanks to Ross Lydall (@RossLydall) of the Evening Standard whose picture of teh new roof at King's Cross was just retweeted. We need an inspiring antidote this morning.

Oooh.
You get a little sneak peak if you glance up as you move from platforms 9 and 10 into the main station, but this is starting to look pretty special.
Although the way the triangles stretch out does remind me a little bit of a string bag...

Exactly, that's the trouble .. without wanting to be churlish... who's going to wash these fishnets when they get dirty.. and they will very quickly..
A nice idea, but IMO not very practical - but all the same, a nice try at mixing heritage with modern.. not really very zack..zack!

@Alix... Self cleaning glass? Not heard of that, but no doubt a good idea here..
Here, we do have remote 'dogs' that clean glass on difficult to reach station buildings, especially where there are solar panels..
But occasionally - a bloody good sweep - is better

I also agree with @Hugo Read (below) that it's better than the copy-cat victorian stuff @Liverpool Street, but would remind him that in it's time, the 70's frontage at King's Cross was seen as a vast improvement on what had been there previously.. Let's wait and see what this new addition looks and feels like in thirty-forty years time..

It's great, and just the kind of juxtaposition of modern against Victorian that we so badly need more of, which can highlight the value of both architectures without the addition compromising the original building. I can't wait until the awful 70s (?) facade comes off the front of the station to reveal the fabulous original. That's not until 2013 though I believe. The fact that this new add-on is on the side means that the original front will come back to its full glory - it's a very clever design.
This kind of thing is SO much better than the awful buildings that are copy-cat faux-Victorian with no bravery or architectural merit at all. If it looks like fishstockings, well, so what - that seems pretty sexy, all the better!

Cool - it looks a bit like the Great Court at the British Museum which is really lovely, and many years later still appears clean!
