Anti-austerity candidates standing in May elections in Haringey
The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) will be standing candidates in a number of wards across the borough this May.
The Con-Dem's dismantling of the welfare state has put the very existence of local council services at risk. The Labour leader of Birmingham council, the UK's biggest local authority, has spoken of the 'end of local government'. However, it is not true that councils can do nothing but accept the government's attacks. They still control billions of pounds of public services and have powers they could use to resist. Councillors have a choice. They can make a difference and take steps to improve the lives of millions of people - but only if they are prepared to take a stand.
TUSC has agreed a policy platform, which, if adopted by just a handful of councils, could make a difference. TUSC's policy platform includes:
oppose all cuts to council jobs, services, pay and conditions - reject the claim that 'some cuts' are necessary to our services;
refuse to implement the Bedroom Tax. Councils should write off all bedroom tax-related arrears, withdraw all court proceedings and eviction orders where the bedroom tax has been a factor, and call on Housing Associations to do the same;
support all workers who take action against the cuts, privatisation and the government's policy of making ordinary people pay for the crisis caused by the bankers and the bosses. Defend the national collective bargaining arrangements for council workers;
reject increases in council tax, rent and service charges to compensate for government cuts;
campaign for rent controls for all private tenants;
oppose racism and fascism and stand up for equality for all;
campaign for the introduction of a living wage above the minimum wage, including for council employees and those working for council contractors;
support action against climate change and for a future where sustainability comes before profit;

The Green Party in Haringey is also standing candidates on an anti-austerity basis.
We believe in a Green New Deal and local investment for jobs, defending the NHS against the privatization of it, and will challenge the Labour Council on making cuts rather than fighting austerity, and their top down approach to bringing corporate development into the borough.
Alexandra Ward is the target ward for the local election, now with Lucy Craig and Tom Watson - both former Labour councillors, and Gordon Peters, standing. Other ward candidates to be announced shortly

So, in protest against 'da cutz', a 'worker' who is a council tenant decides to withold their council tax. I take it you won't be sending the baillifs round to them any time soon?

Who is David? What is he? Not Dave Nellist, I'm guessing. There are 10 plain 'Davids' and 67 Davids + 2nd Name among HOL's Membership.
Shouldn't 'David' reveal himself and make a suitable Declaration of Interest. I only know that he's opposed to HSSG becoming an "academy"(sic) - as thousands of us should be - and that he may have some passing interest in cat-flaps - as no doubt a pathetic minority of Members may have. Neither of these positions persuades me to become a TUSKER or to contact TUSC to support their multifarious policies.

Well, you can oppose the cuts all you like - they are not going to stop. So, if you are not going to do increases - WHERE EXACTLY will the money come from.

Local government - our schools and so on - is facing massive cuts to pay for welfare for the rich (bank bailouts etc). Instead of a real alternative we have parties that love the cuts and those that really regret them.
Many of us think we need a party that fights for working class people and nowadays - the '99%.' Labour was set up for that but doesnt do it. Before we completly loose the NHS and all the gains that have been made since the 'hungry 30s' we need a politcal voice that fights for resources for schools and hospitals rather than giving handouts to banks and the rich. That is the idea of a coalition of trade unionists and socialists (TUSC).

In the 2010 general election, the TUSC candidate for Tottenham was Jenny Sutton.
There was no candidate nominated for Hornsey & Wood Green.
With former MP Dave Nellist, and now a Councillor in Coventry, as their main national spokesperson , it is safe to assume that TUSC is a reincarnation of Militant tendency.

It's the country's economic disaster Jonny. Tories brought in the private finance initiative (PFI)under Major (1992). it was the Aussies who first thought up the idea btw. Labour simply accelerated this finance model. All the main parties support it!
